I'm seeing around 20 fps max with all the sliders down. The box for agp is not available. I have ati 9800 pro (4x agp) on an athlon 2000 with the latest drivers.

That's right, ATI cards have AGP issues in SL. The box is greyed out because you have an ATI video card. Depending on the performance of some of ATI's upcoming drivers, the Lindens may re-enable the toggle for ATI users.
As for your performance, SL isn't a first-person shooter like Quake. 20FPS is actually pretty decent for that CPU.

Eh? Cat, no offense, I know you're the tech goddess of SL and I worship you just about as much as all your other followers but... my PC is a 3 year old athlon thunderbird 1333, underclocked to 1000 because it keeps overheating. I usually get more than 20 fps, heck, sometimes it even goes up to 50. I do have an nvidia card, but its the sucky FX5200. *shrugs*

What? No offense intended as well, Eggy, but are you sure you're looking in the right place? And that you're not misreading "5.0" as "50"? If you're actually getting average framerates in that range, what settings do you have? Even with everything turned down, I'm still skeptical that it could be that high on a 1Ghz CPU. I'm skeptical that it could even be that high on a 3Ghz CPU.

Uh I'm pretty much using the default settings except I keep my draw distance at 64 all the time, and my network setting at 100kbps to save bandwidth. 1GHz is more than enough for SL, the requirements state 800MHz, and I happen to know that someone rather famous in SL runs it on a 500MHz P3 without hassle. I didnt say it was an "average" fps, as SL doesnt keep track of averages and I hardly keep the fps window open, but its fairly normal for me to see 20 fps there, and if I'm underwater or up in the sky, or just in an especially empty place, it can sure reach 50.

I'm sure I reached 20 once or twice...
I have a GeForce 4Ti 4600 with 128MB I have an Athlon XP 2600+ I have 1GB of DDR RAM
My *usual* fps is around 10.
Granted, I have resolution set high (1280x1024) and draw distance at 192m ...
Course, some places (i.e. the Whitestar Casino) need me to drop everything to minimum, turn off local lighting and relog, just to get 2 or 3 fps ... (it's a very pretty building though)

I suppose it may depend on how you USE second life... I'm pretty much alone all the time, unless you count my trusty default textured cube as company, or the bigass scripting window in front of it I'm sure a couple of socializers who always have 5 or 6 friends in their lavishly decorated house would need a beefier box to run SL well.

Got something to be ashamed of there? Reading Microsoft Weekly News or something there? eh? eh? From: someone Originally posted by Eggy Lippmann

Thanks for all the .. um .. help. I ran in to some people and they told me that ati cards are a known problem and there is a fix coming 'soon'. Till then I've settled on settings that give me a fairly smooth 12-15 fps. I'm just used to blazing fps with that card, but the more I played the less it seemed to matter, til I tried to ride a motorcyle. That was FUNNY!

Actually, in SL, it's not your video card, but your CPU that's important. The video card really only makes it look better.
Upgrading your CPU to even a Athlon 2500+ (Barton core) would likely do far more to affect your framerate than upgrading to ATI or Nvidia's latest offerings. Yes, it'd look much better, but the actual framerate wouldn't change much.

Unfortunately the pc is in feature freeze at the moment, but that (cpu/mobo) is the next upgrade. I upgrade one component about every 6 months with the 2nd or 3rd best thing, thats all the budget will handle. I'm having plenty of fun though, I think I'm gonna have to buy land in sl. WoooHooo!

From: someone Originally posted by Eggy Lippmann Uh I'm pretty much using the default settings except I keep my draw distance at 64 all the time, bingo a draw distance of 64 renders 1/4 of the 'world that a draw distance of 128 does... combining that with staying in isolation its not *THAT* big a deal when i work 600m up on things its not unusual for me to get 100fps *WITH* 6x fsaa enabled in welcome with a bunch of people however its more like 10ish alot depends on area too... i can easily stand in one place and look in a direction and get 50fps, and then look 90 degrees off to another direction and get 5 part of the problem is *ALOT* of people in SL build *HORRIBLY* inefficiently when it comes to the amount of graphics load a given 'object' takes... using large numbers of transparent or shiny curved surfaces is essentially BEGGING to bring your framerate to its knees.
