View Distance of (I think they may be called) Particle Effects?

Over the months I've been on SL, I have found myself some nice subtle little floating globes of light effects.

You know, 1 central invisible prim, that puts out small temp illuminated, semi transparant objects.

You could call them fireflies (if you wished to be artistic) :)

But, you don't appear to be able to see these things from very far away.

I'd guess only about 32m (ish) do they become visible, any further and they just dissapear from view (which is a shame)

Is there any viewer settings that would make these kind of objects visible from a greater distance?

thanks

You could try increasing your draw distance or increasing the size of the invisible object or linking the invisible object to a larger object.

Thanks for the follow up (didn't notice I had a reply)

It's nothing to do with not being able to SEE the particle effects as such.

I think it's more to to with when your avatar is a certain distand away from some types of particle effect, they just stop.

Like I had a nice cloud of fog. I fly oh, we'll say 64m away and the fog stops (you can see it turn off) you fly back again, and the effect starts up again.

It's not a case of coming into view. I can see it all clearly, it's that the actual fog generator stops when the avatar position moves away from it.

Particle Culling vs LOD object culling

Theres two things which could be causing this for you. The first is that the SL clients now cull and do not render any particle smaller than a given size... it may depend slightly on your preferences, display size, etc, im not 100% sure, for me it seems like around 3x3 pixels or less, the particles simply don't render

(i have several 'flow' particle systems where they gradually shrink and you can see them just dissapear when they shrink past that minimum size)

The second thing that may be causing this is the emitter itself not being rendered.

SL particles are actually a 'property' of a prim that spawns them, and if the client stops rendering that prim (i.e. its too far away, too small, etc) *all* particles associated with that prim will drop away immediately.

There are some workarounds for each of these cases, if you own the object, if you don't, unfortunately, there isnt' that much you can do.
