whenever i use the viewer, eventually the whole comp freezes, or it crashes, closes, causes the desktop graphics to become distorted, and makes a few programs to not work properly
is it my computer or SL itself? and how do i fix it?

From your rather brief account of what happens I would say it's computer. Giving some details about your computer, network, connection, operating system, viewer version, and most importantly your video card and it's drivers would go a long way for people trying to help you out if a fix.
My first thought is your graphics card/driver........or overheating.
