I tried a demo skin on just for kicks and now, no matter what I do, I can't get rid of that awful 'demo tattoo' all over my avatar's body. I'm not really a computer whiz and sure could use some simple suggestions to get out of this mess. Please help!

You have to wear some kind of skin so you can't take it off, only replace it with another skin.
Find another skin in your inventory and drag it onto your avatar, any skin will do. You can search for "Skin" in your inventory window to see what skins you have.
