Would be a bit late if it was true since SL's been down for hours.
Fortunately, it's not... so

I think he's referring to the Second Life program folder on our local drive. Eelco, it's always a really really really exceptionally bad idea to store your own files in with program files. Keep them in a separate Documents folder or something that no program is likely to erase.

Hours of work on my "oohhs" and "ahhs" and "i gotta go pee" sound files ... gone. Hours of work on my "no boobie buildings" and "no lag" and other protest sign textures ... gone. All-important snapshots of in-game situations ... like, all THREE of them *gasp* ... gone. Fortunately, everything was uploaded to the server. Is it possible to download back to local hard drive for both sounds and textures?

Forgive my ingnorance... but does this mean we have to download our foriegn textures (at 10L$ a pop)? Or just that we shouldn't store the original files there?

don't store anything useful in a directory who's path starts with <drive-letter>:\Program Files\
that's all

Olympia, no, your inventory is safe.
This refers to any textures, clothing, sounds, etc, that you have made and have stored in the SL folder on your computer. When you install a new version it will wipe out everything in your SL folder. Make sure if you have anything stored in that folder that you move it out before you update. It won't affect anything in your actual avatar's inventory in the game however.

All my second life stuff that I keep locally I have in My Documents under a directory 'Second Life'...
Just seemed logical to do it that way -- as a Unix Head I've always thought keeping all your personal stuff in the same place as the application as a bit -- well -- insane.
Siggy.

Just curious...
If you have lost your personal files in this manner, is it possible to do a System Restore (winodws feature) to roll back to a time before you did the update and get those files back?
