This morning, at about 8:30 EDT (5:30 PDT) I attempted to log in to the production grid.
Logged in fine, found servers, connected to region, etc. When "downloading inventory," as soon as the progress bar made it all the way to the right, SL crashes to the desktop and sends a crash report.
LL should have received three crash reports from me this morning. The first one, obviously, I just tried to log in. The second one, I just thought "WTH?" and retried to see if it was a fluke. I then deleted my SL cache (since the problem seemed that it might be inventory related) and tried again. Crash #3. At that point, I gave up and decided to go to work.
Now, I know the first thing I'm probably going to hear (read) is to "uninstall and re-install SL." Yeah, sure, that may or may not fix it. But when you un-install SL, you lose all of your settings, and it really gets to be a PITA. Not to mention, this would be the second time THIS WEEK that I've had to do this. (I was getting random crashes a couple of days ago.)
These random crashes from SL apparantly destabilizing itself somehow are rather annoying. I mean, I deleted the cache, what else is there to get corrupted, anyway? SL was working fine last night when I logged, then this morning I'm screwed. I checked this forum to see if anyone else was having login problems this morning, and apparently it's just me.
Basically, I'm having a hard time understanding why a program that's running perfectly can be shut down normally, then refuse to re-launch. Nothing has changed on my system in the past 12 hours. (Except possibly my virus definitions, but I didn't get a virus alert, so there shouldn't be a connection there.)
And just in case anyone's in the mood to blame my hardware: - Asus P4P800S motherboard, flashed - Intel P4/2.8EGHz CPU (1MB L2 cache, hyper-threading) - 1GB PC3200 DDRAM - Western Digital 120GB SATA HDD w/ 8MB cache - nVidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra (256MB VRAM) (up-to-date) - SB Audigy sound card (up-to-date as of 5 weeks ago)
The Audigy and the video card are the only pieces of hardware in this machine that are over two months old.
*Edit* Forgot a stat!

This just in...

I just noticed that Ice Brodie was posting a thread about inventory problems while I was typing this one. I am now wondering if these problems are related, and there's maybe something wrong with the inventory database?

Have you experienced any inventory problems on the preview?

Kelly, I didn't try the preview. I was only logging in to accept some inventory items before I left for work. After the 3rd login crash I just gave up and left.
But, I was in preview last night, and didn't have any trouble with inventory there. Nor did I have any trouble in production last night.

Same problem on my Mac PowerBook
06-11-2004 13:58
Yesterday I had no problem. Today, after logging in my compter completely froze (very unusual). I tried it again - same result. So I uninstalled SL, and dumped all preferences & the cache. Then I logged in and froze for the 3rd time.
I have a 15" PowerBook 1.5GHz G4 768MB RAM 64MB ATI 9700

Apparently, my problem was indeed related to the inventory problem others were having this morning. I was able to log in when I got home from work.

This morning I logged in to the preview and flew around for a few minutes without a problem. Then I tried logging into the regular game and it froze my computer after about 20 seconds.

My problem is the ATI card
06-13-2004 14:22
I figured it out last night. My new powerbook has and ATI card in it - my iMac has an nvida card. Too bad. For the few seconds I could get the AGP acceleration to work I was getting 20 - 25fps. With it turned off I get about 15fps. I hope this gets fixed soon.

Alyten, your problem is almost certainly driver-related. You need to download and install the latest drivers for your video card and motherboard chipset, as well as DirectX.
