I'm having the same problem, and I've used a lot of my techie mojo to work around it to no avail. I have angered the silicon gods, and now they are taking it out on me!

Edit: After doing a little more homework and checking all my settings again, I found a solution to the crash on multimedia initialization part of logging in. If you have an ATI Radeon video card with Catalyst installed, turn OFF the Catalyst A.I. in the control center. I dunno why it caused things to not work now, it had worked before, but SL now fully logs in and runs when I have it off. I also reinstalled DirectX 9.0c beforehand, but I don't think that was what fixed it.

I don't know if it's an ATI specific issue, but since I don't use nVidia cards or drivers, I don't know what to say about fixing this problem if nVidia is the card you're using.

Right click the ATI icon near the clock on your taskbar.
Go up to the top instance of your video card listed.
Go to 3D Settings.
Go to Catalyst A.I.
Disable it.

That should be detailed enough for anyone unfortunate enough to replicate this problem in the future.

I'm having the same problems, but I can get in just fine, but it starts to get really slow, and crashes me to desktop. It only started a few days ago, as I was just fine last week. And seeing as I'm not on an ATI, I know that above won't do me any justice. :(

BTW..
I"m on a 3GHz PIV with 1GB RAM and a Geforce FX 5200 (it's old, but it works)

Logging in issue

Says it logging me out.... I asked my mom to sign in and watch my mail box after I was signed out, and it shows me off-line, then suddenly it goes green and it says I am on-line, when she tries to tp to my location I am not there at all. Like in Limbo. her friends list says i am on-line and I am not...

Before you start to guess that it is someone else accessing the account. Its not. I already checked that, by the teleport thing, The server is thinking I am logged in and I am not. I am thinking it might be something in my inventory , something odd. Dunno...It just started happening since last friday.

Anyone else ever see this?

You guys are lumping several different problems into one single issue. Crashing before being able to log in is quite different than logging in and someone else showing as not logged in (or vice versa.........I'm a little confused).

For the failure to log in the usual clear cache and retry may solve the problem for you. If not then a check for a later driver for you card would something to do. If you find a new driver then make sure you uninstall the old driver before you install the new one. ATI has had issues with the Catalyst drivers in the past but I don't use ATI so I cannot say that is a fact......just what I've heard. NVidia cards and drivers seem to have fewer problems because of nVidia's OpenGL support over ATI.

For the person being online when they are not.........or, like I said vice versa. It could very well be that you are ghosted. If you know your location in SL you can contact Linden Lab and request a sim restart to get you unghosted. If you are on a private estate contact the sim owner and request a sim restart.

And it might help if you would give some system specs to help anyone who might have some ideas a clue or two. Saying "it don't work" without some details does nothing to help anyone help you.
