I had that happen too! Worked fine on my desktop but when I switched to the laptop - better graphics and faster - no sound!

To be honest Zoey, I gave up on sound in SL a long time ago. I keep it muted at all times. The sound system is very broken, and when it does work still isn't very good. Doesn't look like it got so much as touched for 1.1 either.
And on to the relevant portion of this post: I seem to recall there being a bug with the sound stopping/looping/doing nothing on any/all Soundblaster cards and SL, so if you have one, that's likely the culprit.

Same here Si,
I have been playing with my sound off for awhile now due to sound issues. Below are the specs for the machine I am currently using, but this is not the only machine that I have experienced sounds issues with SL on.
I have loaded every single MS and Dell driver update there is, so I am current on everything.

my sound card went bad or something a while back. And just after Gwydeon had messed with all the sound options lol. But i doubt he caused it to go all wobbly and weird with no base. But for some reason the sound on SL still sounds really clear.

Thats odd- i've had no problems at all with sound since day one, spanning two different computer configurations.. Heres some specs for possible comparison:
First Setup ABit KX7-333 motherboard AMD XP 1900 CPU SoundBlaster PCI 128 GeForce 4 Ti4400 Windows 2000 768mb DDR Stock windows SB drivers
Second Setup Soyo Dragon KT600 AMD XP 2600+ CPU 768mb DDR GeForce FX 5900 VIA stock-mobo sound ^ * worked fine M-Audio Audiophile 2496 ^ * Studio/Preformance grade card. Known issues w/ DirectSound on most studio based cards, suprisingly works with no problems
I did have some sound wierdness after deleting my cache, so far as sounds not downloading at normal speeds.

Zoey is right.

Starting last monday/tuesday, sound -specifically music & animation sounds like laughing- became intermittent issues for me, where prior to then I had never had a problem.
Music cuts in and out repeatedly (which makes it very difficult for me to earn my wage in SL dancing); and sometimes animation sounds occur seconds after the animation itself.
I've heard people say built-in motherboard sound is bad or that Sound Blast Live Value is bad (I have both); I did not have any problems at all for my first 2weeks in SL.
I know my system is a P4 running over 3.0ghz with 1024megs of ram using built in sound - so this is not an issue of my system being bogged down.
Since every action sets in motion an equal, opposite reaction; then what set in motion the degraded sound in SL where for 2weeks there was no problem?

Well that's a law of physics...(one of the ones that make sense!), here we're talking the laws of software development...WHERE NONE OF THEM MAKE ANY SENSE! Just kidding. Sound is a little buggy but I don't consider it so buggy that I leave it off. The only thing I get is the occasional problem with sound playing veryvery slow/static-y.... I can't describe it. I have integrated sound (which is disabled) and a SB Live Value, which is the one I'm using. But anyway I haven't literally lost all sound...

Creative SB Live! Series (WDM) sound card.
My sound works for maybe five to ten minutes when I first log on, then it just goes away. No need to turn it off, does it all by itself. This has always been an issue for me.

I never really had sound problems in SL before either, but the last few days have been buggy. Sounds cutting on and off, etc... Using a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 card here.

Same here...over the past several days I have noticed that sounds do not always work when played from a script or from my inventory. I had no problems before this...Just sort of cropped up all of a sudden. I reinstalled everything I could think of (Drivers, DX9b, SL etc) and it remains the same. It seems to be intermittent so I am guessing that the problem does not live on my end.
Nice to see others are having the same problem though...I thought it was just me.

Yup yup, I've noticed some intermittent sound weirdness the past few days as well, like delays in the time it takes for an audio gesture to sound, or the sound of the avatar typing cutting in and out.

Yeah, I've been having the same problems with sound over the last few days as well.
Also, the world is a LOT laggier than it used to be. Could it be that this is because of the switch to 1.1 and that some of the servers have already been switched over?

I haven't had an issue of sound going out, ever, so I can't complain there.
However I have been experiencing generally more lag, and most noticeably lack of gesture sounds. I'm figuring their packets are getting lost in the traffic.

My sound hasnt worked in a week. No sound. Nothing. Nothing changed on my end from a driver/hardware situation. It used to work great when I first started playing. Btw, its some onboard via POS. So obviously I could care less about sound from my box. (Its a development pc, I just installed SL for kicks when Im bored, or eating lunch at my desk.)

um I'm a bit embarassed about this, but..... the reason I didn't have sound is because I didn't know there was a manual control for sound on the side of the laptop I'm using for the game.
