Constant Disconnects

Hey, I've been experiencing constant disconnections in the game. It's gotten so bad tonight that I'm just about giving up for the night. I have a cable internet connection with good latency and 3megabit downstream. My brother also has an account, and all this seemed to have started when he started playing too. We both play on the in-house LAN on my router, a Linksys BEFSR41.

I wasn't having any problems until he started playing. And it's kinda unfair since I introduced him to it in te first place ;). Does it have anything to do with 2 connections from the same IP address? What is the best configuration for two clients connecting over a NAT? It's very sudden and without warning. I'll be building or just exploring and suddenly either I can't move, I fall through the ground, the game freezes, or I simply get the "bonk" noise and the disconnect notice. I've ended up sending 3 or so of those automated crash notifications.

Can anyone help me out here? I also have 256kbit upstream bandwidth, could that be the problem? How can I configure 2 clients to play nice on a 3mbit down/256kbit up connection? Right now it's unplayable, and he doesn't seem to be as affected by it. I haven't installed anything lately except the new update.

Yes, the BEFSR41 doesn't really work with SL. Linksys kind of skimped on that. See Doug Linden's explanation here.

You may be able to connect by specifying which port you wish to use on one of the two computers. As Tito Gomez says in this thread, editing the "Second Life" shortcut to read:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\newview.exe" -port 13000

...instead of:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\newview.exe"

...should fix the problem.

Did that actually solve the problem? I have a BEFSR41 kicking around here, but I've never bothered to test it out.

Same Problem

Since yesterday (10/2), I have been constantly disconnecting as well.

I can barely stay in-world for 5 minutes before the scenery starts to flash and subsequently disappear along with my avatar, at which point the client will freeze and/or crash.

This had never happened in 1.4 or 1.5 up until yesterday. Only system change in the past few days was to upgrade J2RE SE from 1.4.2 to 1.5 (Java 2 Runtime Environment).

Yours is a different problem, Lukas. If I had to guess, I'd say your problem is more a result of the (ongoing?) DDOS attack on the Linden servers. I guess someone didn't like getting banned.
