First, a disclaimer. The 1.4 Preview was just fine.

This was what greeted me when I logged in to 1.4.0 for the first time today:

So I went visiting my neighbor, who looked like this:

Apparently I look fine to her...

Must be a Mac thing. All objects look just fine.

Try turning off AGP acceleration.

I've seen that one on the Mac client. Turn off the option for "avatar rendering algorithm" or whatever it is. (I'm at work - no Mac client here.)

Edit > Preferences > Options, uncheck "Avatar Vertex Program (faster)".

Like someone in a different thread, I went through and deleted everything to do with Second Life - even the directories.

Then started afresh with a new disk image. It was fine after that. Sure, I had to redo my preferences, but that beats not being able to see people properly any day!
