T9300 2.50 gHz 4gb memory with nvidia 8800 gtx
also has intel turbo memory
vista 64 bit home edition
its a clevo notebook m570ru
GPU Driver version 174.33 officially supported by clevo (have also tried 175 variants, 167.43, 174.90)

ok so the main issues I get are...

Things seem to rez in a very strange way with backgrounds rezzing far quicker than the foreground.

and the client crashes sometimes as soon as you log in, sometimes withing 5-10mins. if you look at complex tasks like inventory or camming around or you try to go to a sim with lots of people it crashes almost instantly sometimes.

When it crashes there is a screen flicker and a vista TDR nvidia driver recovery error which leaves the game crashed woth a white screen rendered. Disabling TDR in vista only allows SL to bluescreen the entire system.

Now this issue only happens with SL. No other games and this happens with the current client and also the release candidates too. Seemingly with all windlight releases. Whether it happens with non windlight i do not know or have one to test but...

Surely one of you use an 8800m mobile GPU with SL ok?

This is not a tech support forum. We are all just regular SL residents trying to help out others who might have a problem we know of or have some ideas. I'm sure someone will read this sooner of later that could offer some help.

Patience.

Try 169.25 if you haven't already. I found that to be the most stable driver not only with SL, but Bioshock too (which was more of a problem actually). I'm on Vista x64 too, but using a different NVidia card (desktop, not mobile).

The driver recovery is rather suspicious and makes me wonder if the GPU is overheating. Have you checked the CPU & GPU temperatures at the point of crashing? You can use Everest Free Edition for this:

yep the temperatures were under 75 at their highest peak - it reaches this in another game too, eve-online and crysis but neither suffer the same fate. And still within limits for a notebook GPU. I've met people who have success with the desktop version of the 8800 but the mobile version may be a complete dfferent ball game.
167.43 , 174.33 , 174.90 , 175.83 . I will see if I can find a 169.25 that works with my notebook. I have to be careful with drivers cause its a bluray notebook and they have to support that.
