Seeing who online and chatting without running SL Client?

Is there any software that would run on a lower spec machine that allows allows you to see who is on-line and chat to them, without actually running the SL viewer client.

Something like MSN messenger (in a kinda way) which just connects to the "Contacts" aspect of SL ?

So you could chat to friends, and see them come and go, but without (as I say) actually running a whole SL client front end?
