Excessive Lag?

Hey everyone,

I've been playing SL for almost three months now (wow, time flies) and have noticed lag every once in a while due to events, teleporting or whatever... and it's always been tolerable and understandable.

The past couple of weeks after playing the game for a short period of time (maybe 30 mins), I start to get quite laggy... not all the time or in a certain place. It seems like my system gets "filled up" and starts to act choppy. If I log off and log back on.. it's fine for a while and then starts again.

Any ideas on what I can do? Is there a cache file setting or one I can delete and start again? I haven't changed any settings recently for that to be the reason.

Thanks for your help!

I've noticed the same thing, in exactly the same time frame: the last couple of weeks, especially bad for the last week. I hadn't heard anything more than the usual level of complaints about lag from anyone else until now.

It seems "bursty": I'll get a few seconds of solid bandwidth, then hit a long, persistent "lag slick". If I'm in motion, I stay in motion, to the point of marching through walls and burying myself into the ground. Then stop for a few second (remaining completely unresponsive), then snap back to the first physical barrier I encountered.

It happens so frequently that at times the game is completely unuseable. I've had to skip events because my system was so unresponsive I couldn't participate. 1.1.9 made no difference at all.

Can anyone help?

(If I may ask, JonMichael, where are you in RL, and what ISP do you use? I'm in Houston, and connect through RoadRunner. Is it perhaps a regional or ISP problem?)

Hi Liberty!

Nope.. not a regional problem. I'm in Pittsburgh and connect thru Verizon DSL. I have a close friend who is in Western Canada who is having the same problems.

Hmm... playing solid for three months... Whoa!

I think your cache file might be corrupted, its safe to delete it, SL will just rebuild one the next time you log on. I believe its located in the %SYSTEMROOT%/Documents and Settings/%USER%/Application Data/Second Life/
directory.

You could just reinstall SL as well, I believe that deletes the cache file.

It's not a corruption of the cache file. I regularly delete my cache every 2 or 3 weeks. Also, when an update comes along, it auto-deletes the old cache.

Me too, same symptoms. After being logged on for a while (maybe less than an hour?), the frame rate becomes extremely slow and it becomes virtually impossible to move. Crossing sim borders is a nightmare.

Relogging restores a normal frame rate for a short time.

You might also try restarting the computer when the problem gets really bad. Windows (not so much XP and 2000) has always tended to have memory management problems, leaking and fragmentation. Before XP, I would have to restart the machine once or twice a day; since XP, I can run for weeks without turning off the computer.

I'm getting the same issues mentioned above, just in the last week. I have trouble landing at events because I repeatedly overshoot them due to lag and end up way on the other side of where I was trying to go. I wasn't having this problem before last week.

Running XP, already did the whole reboot, delet cache file, etc. :)

The only problem which annoys me sometimes is that I tend to levitate upwards while hovering at a standstill. I'll try to counteract it, but it just keeps pushing me up a few times, almost like a land ban is in effect (but this happens anywhere I am).

Don't know how else to describe it, but I was wondering if unexpected 'jumps' upward happen to anyone else.

Maxx Monde,
The unexpected jump upwards has happened to me, but ususally after doing a jump. I just restart SL and it stops it. But it has also happened the way you described it.

For what it's worth, I did a clean uninstall and reinstall of the SL client software, and that seemed to mostly clear it up. (Now I only have to deal with normal lag. *sigh*)
