Problems with ATI cards

Seems as though a whole lot of folks are having problems with ATI graphics cards especially when using the new 8.1 and 8.2 drivers.

I recently got one of the new 3870 X2 cards which is awesome in other games I play but wouldn't run SL for more than a few mins without crashing. I have to use the 8.1 or 8.2 drivers as they are the only ones to support this card.

I've switched to the Windlight viewer as it seems to be a little more stable, I could run SL for a few mins using this but it ran like a slideshow - under 10fps. Jerky and horrible.

I have found that disabling Catalyst A1 in the Catalyst Control Centre helped increase stability but the low frame rate still persists.

Disabling VBO under edit/preferences/graphics/hardware options seems to correct this and everything runs quite smoothly and still looks about the same. Not sure what VBO does but disabling it sure seems to help.

Just to add that have been running SL for well over an hour now with no problems - no crashes or slow jerky performance. Something I couldn't do at all without the workaround I have posted.

I'm surprised after reading all the tons of posts here about ATI problems lately that no one seems to be noticing this post. I'm curious to see if it works for others.

how did you even get into SL to go to edit.....i was fine yesterday but today..suddenly im crashing like crazy and cant even get inworld. I didnt change anything at all on my computer..and the graphics drivers have not up updated..everything on the compute ris the same as it was yesterday.

Ive cleared my cache, uninstalled and reinstalled SL, disabled the CAtalist A1...and i still cannot get into game

On the start up screen in the top left corner click on edit/preferences. You don't need to be in SL to edit your preferences.
