Hello fellow residents,

Looking for some smart guy or girl to help me out with an odd problem. Over the last two months I have had a problem in which... when I try to change any of the values of a prim.. be that size, shape, colour or texture.. it holds that position for a short time and then jumps back to either an old position or somewhere in between. So if I stretch the prim.. it stays where I stretch it too for a few seconds and them springs back either to how it was or to a size somewhere with that the range I have stretched it too.

I make furniture and put on events and at the moment I have ground to a stop as building anything at the moment is simply impossible.

So thats the result of the problem I will let you know what I have done to try and find the cause.

About the same time this started to happen I noticed my ping time shooting up to between 300-600.. as reported on the SL lag meter. It makes sense that SL server is only getting part of bits of the data and them jumping around not knowing what to do. I have run some ping tests from my computer to SL servers and it is in the 250ms range. although when I try doing a Tracert through windows I get a ping from my home router but after that it just keeping timing out. I thought it may be my phone line, but this problem is not consistent and it seems to go away early hours of the monrning here in the UK. So at times when the UK is not very active it seems ok. But as soon as it gets into day time the problem starts. So that makes me question if it is my phone line? So I then turned to my ISP and they ran some tests.. but I got the feeling that the support tech just did not have a clue. After testing a lot of things he said "ow we have just had some data come through and will look at it" but I felt he was saying.. "I don't have a clue" I just can't seem to track down what this might be, who's fault it is and is there anything I can do to fix it. I could change my ISP, but I want to be sure it is them first before I try that option.

Has anyone any idea what this may be.. and what fault finding methods can I use to track down where this problem is. It has made my SL business grind to a holt so I really do seek some wisdom from the community.

Many Thanks

This sounds a lot like the problem I had when I was in the dorms for college. Basically I resorted to only using the values within the edit window and waiting a period between each modification.

You said it has been going on for the last 2 months. Was there any change you made to your network around that time? Also can you describe your network setup (ie. Computer -wireless/wired> Router -> Modem). If you remove the router from the setup do you still have the same issues?

Hi Kerik,

Thanks for responding.. My home set up is as follows.. I have two computers going through a ADSL router provided for by my ISP. I have the same problem on both computers and I have tried switching them around into the different ports on the router and also tried changing the cable. I have tried the router through both of the phone sockets in my appartment. I have not made any changes to my network setup over the this time period. It also seems to effect me in just getting to the SL site. for example it has taken me about 10mins to just get onto this page. From waiting for the main page to load to logging on and then getting to this page in the forum. So it really feels like its something to do with my connection to Linden as all other sites work fine. I also play a few other online games and they perform with out any issues at all, which makes me think there is not a problem with my network/setup or phoneline.

*scatches head* !!!

Interesting to hear you had a simular problem at college. To get around it I have to do a simular thing. I have to make the change to the prim and then high light the value in the edit menu and keep pressing enter over and over to try and get it to accept the value. But this means it once took me 15mins to make an item of furniture and thats now something like 2 hours to do the equivalent. And simply not worth it.

Because my connection works to other places my ISP is not that interested in fixing the issue as they don't see connection to SL as a big deal. And I am on a free account with SL so can't speak to them about it. Feel like the wisdom of this forum is the last chance I have of finding what this may be.

Hmm. Have you noticed any discrepancies between US based and EU based servers?

It sounds like your router is integrated into your modem, so there probably isn't any easy way to debug that. It could be defective, but since you said most other sites are fine then it is probably ok...

You may want to look at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Simulator_IP_Addresses

You could try contacting your ISP again with the IP ranges (ex. 8.2.32.0/22) on that page (you may just want to start off with the IP of the simulator you are on. If they can see the issue you are having they will probably pass you up the chain). If all else fails tell them you are loosing money by not being able to connect to SL and that it is making you seriously consider switching ISPs. They will probably take you more seriously.

It couldn't hurt to try some alternate SL viewers, not that there's any special reason to think that will fix the problem, but it's easy enough to try. You could try the Release Candidate from Linden Lab, the Cool Viewer, and the Nicholaz viewer.

If you can get your router/modem thing switched out at no charge that might be worth trying.
