Hello,
This is my first hope so I hope I do this right. Sent the letter below to the tech support two days ago, no answer yet. So I'm wondering if anyone on the boards has a suggestion? Thanks bunches. Good luck and blessings, Prana

Hello,
I am writing to inform you that I am having problems running the latest Second Life Client. The screen locks up at the point when it says it is Precaching with the green bar full. The animation stops at that point, then the voice starts its introduction to the game and says click on the button below, but no button is visible. My computer is locked up at this point, requiring a manual restart. My system specs are as follows:

Operating System - Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1
Processor - AMD Athlon XP 2000+ CPU (1.7 GHz)
Motherboard - ECS K7S5A
BIOS Version - 10/29/2002 S
Chipset - SiS 735
RAM - 512MB DDR266 RAM
Audio - C-Media AC97 Audio Device (Integrated)
Video - ATI Radeon 7500 64MB 4X AGP
LAN - SiS 900 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet (Integrated - to Internal Network)
- Intel PRO/100+ Server Adapter PCI (to Cable Modem)
Hard Drive - Seagate ST380021A 80GB EIDE Hard Drive (Master - Channel 0, ATA/100)

Removable Media
- 3.5" 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive
- Creative DVD1241E 40x8x DVD-ROM Drive (Master - Channel 1, ATA/33)
- Lite-On 12x10x32x CD-RW Drive (Slave - Channel 1)
Internet Connection - Cable Modem

I have updated the AGP driver for the motherboard to the latest version, as well as the video drivers and ran Microsoft's DirectX 9 Installer. I have also changed various settings in the Preferences windows for the Client program, but to no avail. I also make sure that all other programs are closed via Windows Task Manager before running the Client. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

It's probably the video card.

The game only supports radeon 8000 and higher.

Hello Jack,
Yes I used to play TSO. I still do occasionally but I don't know if I will much longer. It's nice to see a familiar face, so to speak :) Hopefully I'll get this fixed and see you in SL shortly. Good luck and blessings, Prana

Welcome Prana, I had the same problem when I first tried to log on and turned out to be my Norton Internet Security. If you have a software firewall, try disabling and logging in. If it works, you have some place to start.

Good luck and hope to see you in world soon.

Dude, how long did you let it run.... there is a bug... blah blah... when you run XP, it reads your whole HD whne you get in for some reason. I have waited up to 5 mins. BTW it only happens when you first enter SL after a boot up.

Ok so this is what I did :
I downloaded the newest version and installed. Used Taskmanager to close all programs running that weren't absolutely neccesary including my virus software. Turned off the firewall. This time I got past precaching to where the green bar shows it is loading inventory. But yet again, when the voice over begins everything else stops. The voice over plays through fine but the screen is frozen with the green bar loading inventory. I left it like that for 15 minutes since someone said it reads your whole hard drive so give it time. Nothing changed.

I uninstalled and installed just the latest version and went through all the previous steps. Same deal. I'm wondering if the sound file is whats messing things up since everything loads fine until the soud file starts playing or if it's because I'm using XP. Also, I know I have a Radeon 7500 and the game specs say 8000 or higher but is the game really that picky? I don't see how my video card could be the cause since the problem startes before the game even loads. Any ideas? Good luck and blessings, Prana

It actually sounds like your problem start right exactly when it would start using the video card. Make sure you have the latest drivers, and the under spec card may be the problem.

the game doesn't support radeon 7500, it's that simple.

I can't really get on people's cases for using equipment below min reqs. I use a 16mb video card (GeForce2Go, Laptop), but the game has an option for 16mb video memory even though the min req is 32mb. I am lucky enough that it works. However were it to stop working on a patch or something, my video card would be the first item suspect and not something I would say "It shouldn't be my video card, even though it is under spec....".

I guess what I'm really saying is that if you have trouble playing and any of your system doesn't meat the minimum requirements then that is the first place you should look. Don't expect it to run on a system that doesn't meet the min reqs. Even though it may not be the problem, below min specs are the very first place you should look.

Yes your right, somtimes even though hardware may not be supported it will still work. I played a month of the Ac beta on a video card the game didn't support.
It seems though in this case that the video card would be the likly place to start.

I'm gonna go with videocard on this one.

Otherwise, try this. Set preferences so that fullscreen is off, close the client, start the client again (it will now be in windowed mode). Load up the game, and wait til the bar freezes. If you can't move your mouse around, this is where you stop, drop, roll, and buy a new video card ;) BUT! But if you CAN move your mouse around, click the X to try to close the window. Nothing will happen for about 2 minutes, but if you wait (I suggest waiting 5 minutes TOPS) the window should eventually close. Restart the client, and you should be able to connect and play :)

If you wait the 5 minutes and the window still doesn't close but your mouse can still move around...
I have no solution to this situation, sorry! :(

One more thing that no one suggested, I have often had the same problems, and I set the connection much lower than I should be getting with my dsl. I set it to 100k and it makes everything run smooth. When I have it up at 200k or higher, I get into troubles. Try this before anything else, you might make it in.

Love Ingie

Yay! Woo! & Huzzah!

I broke down and bought a Radeon 9000 so I hope this game doesn't disappoint me! I guess it was the video card all along. In my own defense when I signed up I had just bought a new video card and thought it was a 8000 but it turned out to be a 7500. I'm not tech savvy, so sue me lol. Anyway, I'm here now, so I wanted to thank everyone for thier help. Now I just have to figure out what the heck I'm doing :) Hope to see you all soon. Good luck and blessings, Prana
