When you uninstall there are still files left on your computer - in XP* it's in C - Docs and Settings - your name - Application Data - Second Life.

You might try chucking the settings data.

*For Vista search in the forums for a thread giving the location.

I often see people saying they deleted caches, what are caches and should I be deleting mine?

The cache they are talking about is the SL client cache where textures and such are saved for quick retrieval if you come across that texture again. It sometimes gets corrupted due heavy writing to the cache with over writing when your cache is full. An occassional clearing of the cache helps lessen that problem.

Find the option to clear your cache in "Preferrences". Then "network" where you'll find a button to "clear cache". The cache is cleared upon your next login so if you need it cleared now you will have to relog.
