hi i want to know will it be possible to IM to residents from the main SL website as i cannot get in world due to a smashed up laptop, lol. could anyone help me with this quiry.

I recall there was like a HTML-based client in the works that's text-only so you can still participate in IMs and maybe group chat, but I've no idea how that project's doing.

You can also try ajaxlife.net which is a text-only (pretty much) web-based interface to the grid. You can log in to your SL account and send/receive IMs and local chat (your avatar can be seen in world though you cannot move about), manipulate inventory, and do a few other tasks.
A downside of ajaxlife is that you have to provide your SL password to the ajaxlife site, which some people are (justifiably) uncomfortable doing, though many people on these forums have vouched for the operator of ajaxlife as someone trustworthy.
