Textures load EXTREMELY slow...Second Life unplayable

I installed Second Life the other day and have been having a problem with textures taking forever to load. I figured the best way to explain would be to just take a video of what's happening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42j4QXEl5nM

Even after 5-10 minutes of letting it sit there, most of the textures are still gray or blurry.

Right now I'm running

Windows XP 32-Bit
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E6750 @2.66 GHZ
2 Gigs of RAM
nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb

So as you can see my computer more than meets the requirements, but I tried lowering the settings considerably anyway. No difference. Also, I opened up the lag meter and it told me that everything was completely normal. I tried clearing the cache, tried the Release Candidate. Still, no difference. All my drivers and everything are up to par as well.

Any ideas? Thanks a ton.

Is it the same in every sim? Go to a quiet sim like Davenport if you haven't tried anywhere else yet.

Are you wired or wireless?

Make sure AV isn't choking off the connection.

It looks like there's a bottleneck somewhere. Maybe do a traceroute to see if you see anything.

Make sure SL is not being blocked by a firewall. Reset your router/modem.

There's info in the knowledge base about ports.

I did read something recently... someone changed a setting and it helped him... I'll see if I can find anything relevant.

Probably the setting Osprey is referring to is the texture memory slider. (Edit -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Hardware Options) If it's set too high, it can bog you down. You've got a 320MB graphics card. Try setting it to about 2/3 to 3/4 of that, and see if it helps. Whatever you do, don't set it higher than 320.

My guess is one or more of Osprey's other suggestions is probably your culprit, so make sure to try everything he listed.

ZOMG I'm a goil ;-D

It must be the ancient picture in which I'm wearing Groucho glasses that got me the "he.'

Well, I tried changing the texture memory slider to 2/3 and 3/4 but it made no difference. I did a traceroute...there was a couple 2% and 3% here and there...but mostly 0%. I messed around with the bandwidth slider, lowering it AND raising it. Still no difference. I even tried completely shutting down my AV/Firewall (not the smartest idea, but I thought it was worth a shot ;)) but still no difference.

I notice on the lag meter, every once and while it'll say "5-10% dropped" or "over 10% dropped" but it isn't really constant. And since the traceroute gave me mostly 0% I'm confused :/

Oh, and I'm wired by the way. And it's the same everywhere.

Whoops, sorry Osprey! All this time I never realized.

If it makes you feel any better, people mix up my gender all the time. It's kind of amusing, actually.

Metaphoria, sorry I don't have any further advice for you on this. Maybe someone else will have a better answer. You've already done everything I know to try.

You said you lowered the setttings considerable but didn't say what your settings are.

What's your draw distance?

I started off around 128m, but even lowering it down all the way to 64m (the lowest it would go) made no difference. I even tried using the "low" setting all together - even though my computer is more than capable of high - but everything still loaded just as slow :(

Er.. 5-10% of packets dropped is pretty bad.

Are you using a wireless setup at home?

Have you tried shutting down and unplugging the power from ALL your network stuff for a few minutes?

edit: Osprey's a girl??? Wow.. Who knew? :P

Nope, the set up's wired. I tried resetting the router and everything but no difference. The "5-10% of packets dropped" message only shows up once and awhile and only for a second though...but maybe that's still significant :P

Well, hmm, ...

what is the ISP?

If there a router in the circuit in between the computer and a modem, try going straight from the modem to the computer.

If you have a friend with a computer, you could see if they would bring it over and let you install SL on it and see it that computer also takes forever to load things.

The network card could be defective or have a problem with it's driver.

The thing is...every other aspect of my internet works. I've tried plenty of other online games that all work flawlessly. Not a single hiccup. The only program that doesn't seem to work properly is Second Life...and that's why changing cords and what not doesn't seem to have any effect.
