This started happening a couple of days ago. I log into SL and instead of getting a smooth load when I log into my home, I get bad flickering. avatar corruption, and SL freezes most of the time... for brief moments I can type and move, but then it freezes again and the screen wigs out for a sec... flickering polys in my av followed by everything vanishing except this (see attached screenshot). I've uninstalled and reinstalled SL, uninstalled and reinstalled my graphics card drivers (nvidia ti4600), and installed the latest directx 9.0b, and defagged my HD, and nothing changed. Unless I move SL to another computer I currently cannot log on and play.

The only things that have changed on my computer since this started is I installed sim city 4 deluxe edition and rise of nations, both of which work just fine.

this is what I get when I try and play SL... http://members.aol.com/peregrinesoul/SL-graphicsproblem.jpg

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling SL, or deleting your cache folder?

Try reinstalling your vid drivers?

EDIT:

second thought, check that the other games didnt corrupt or reinstall an older direct X.

Thanks Charlie. I did both... uninstalled and reinstalled the latest drivers and installed the newest direct x 9.0b. No difference.

I'll have to try installing and testing another 3d game to see if it's just an SL problem since both sim city 4 and rise of nations are sprite based. Might have a GPU that's biting the dust or some bad ram on the video card?

Interestingly when I try and run SL on my other computer the monitor goes into sleep mode after a couple of minutes and won't wake up without a reboot.

Ick. thats sounds rough. Did ya do bug scans? antivir, and spywares? If it effects the other system maybe ya got a nasty network related bug?

I had this problem on another machine. Had the same symptoms you did. All I had to do was restart my computer and it worked. hmm

I also had Rise of Nations. Another thing I did after restarting was update to the newest version of RON. Try that if you haven't.

I've got it working on my second machine. If I play in windowed mode the monitor doesn't go into sleep mode. As far ad the original problem, no idea. Fortunately I have a spare graphics card so I'll just have to play musical video cards. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

This is a real head-scratcher. Same results with 1.1?

Hahah Hikaru got it! Maxis is mad for all the TSO refugees we got! heh. Anyways on that other computer that had the same problem as you I had no problem with it in windowed mode so if you haven't tried that, try it. It could be a little thing like that.

Chip-

I took a look at some of our logs and your internet connection has started to drop some data packets. Certainly not enough to be the sole cause of this. However it's an observation.

Another trick you might try is to change your log in in your preferances from your last location to your home and see if that helps. Sometimes that will clear up something that's been corrupted.

Thanks Ian and Colin. Same results with 1.1. I'm of a mind to think that it's a bad video card... possibly heat related problems that have damaged the ram or gpu. I've noticed a few other odd things not related to SL in the past couple of days. I'll just play on the other computer from now on. Don't even have to switch chairs ;P I'll revive this thread with an update when I get around to swapping out this card but my guess at this point is that it's not an SL problem.

As for the packet loss... yep. Don't think it's related but I'm sure it doesn't help. Comcast has horribly erratic signal quality here.

Okay, well I can't play on the other computer either. I can't be in world for more than two minutes before my monitor decides to take the rest of the day off. I'm out of things to try. Unless something changes I can't currently play SL at all
:(

Just wanted to let LL know that I've solved the problems with my first machine. The graphics card was bad (probably heat damage). I replaced it with a Quadro4 I had laying around and it works fine now. Yay!

No real change with the second machine though. Using the
-nothread command switch does seem to make the driver failures happen less frequently, but they still happen. Not so much of an issue now that I can play crash free again on the other computer.
