I have it ... works great. Now if SL would work on allowing us to walk, materialize, and stop all the 'walk on' nonsense ... I would enjoy myself more! UGH .. BIG time lag tonight ... this is just crazy and something that SL really needs to work on .. to keep loyal members.

Diana, just so you know, when you have trouble starting and stopping walking, it's usually a packet loss issue, and the loss almost always occurs somewhere between you and SL, not inside SL itself. There are exceptions, of course, but nine times out of ten, it's an ISP problem or a Level 3 problem, not anything under LL's control.

Don't get me wrong; SL does have it's share of problems. I'm the last person to deny that. But the particular one you described is probably not LL's fault.

If you want to explore the situation a little, try running a traceroute to the sim you're on. You can get the URL of the sim in Help -> About Second Life. You should be able to get a pretty good idea of where the bottleneck is by taking a look at the ping times from server to server.

Sparkle, I'm on cable, but I've got plenty of friends on FIOS, and they've got no complaints. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Not sure I agree with this. If you're in a place that's at all busy, it's more likely to be SVC-4196.

Meade, are you sure posted the right number? SVC-4196 refers to a sim freezing, which, unless I grossly misinterpreted Diana's description, is not the problem she was talking about.

Yep. Absolutely.

When the sim locks up, client-side prediction takes over and off you go, walking into the sunset. Or at least until the sim wakes up and snaps you back.

It's sortofa similar effect to packet loss. I guess anything where you stop talking to the sim but the client is showing you what it thinks will happen will look like this, whether it's walking, flying or building due to a sim stall, sim crash or lost packets.

edit: just go to any high-traffic place in SL and fly in circles to see the issue. It doesn't take a connection to the sim to (appear to) fly in a straight line but it does take the sim sending you updates to turn...

Thanks for the clarification, Meade. :)

Sparkle, I wouldn't worry about the discussion having taken a turn in a new direction. It happens all the time. While you're technically correct that the new subject didn't have much to do with your original topic, it's not necessarily a bad thing when discussion of one thing ends up leading to useful talk about something else, especially when it's AFTER the original question has been satisfactorily answered.

I, for one, am grateful that I was able to learn something from this thread that I didn't know before. That wouldn't have happened had it not been for Diana's quick rant, and Meade's good answer to it.

Fios rocks! You prob. only need the 5/2 plan. Unless you have a few SLers in the house. i think we have 15/5 and that easily a big enough pipe for 3. we also have the fios TV service which happily does not lag the internetz either.

i must note though, that verizons customer service and billing sucks. if their product didnt rock, i'd be elsewhere. (wow, that sounds familiar)

Yep! That it takes somebody with more experience to be polite and not get all pissy about the little things.

TY for the demonstration.
