Low preformance on the GTX 280?

I feel I am not getting the punch I should be getting with this high end graphics card.
When comparing to others who own it, my performance is falling behind. I only get about 30FPS in Left 4 Dead which isn't what other report. I could not even play Crysis because it was about 2-6fps on medium graphics. On Second Life I only get 16 FPS max when more then one avatar is around, even if the draw distance is at its lowest and the graphics are at low.

Here are my Computer Specs:

Motherboard: M3N72-D
BIOS Version: ASUS M3N72-D ACPI BIOS Revision 1102
CPU Name: AMD Phenom X4 9600
Ram: 4 Gigs of DDR2 (PC2-6400)
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 280
PSU: Ultra LSP750 750-Watt
Display driver: 8.16.11.9107 (ForceWare 191.07)

Any Ideas?

Also are you on a wireless network?

You should be good to go. :) But, it does appear something is not allowing the performance you should be getting.

How much do you have running in the background? If you are using Vista do you have all the Aero features turned off? Your anti virus and fire wall settings could be hampering you too.

In your nVidia control panel try setting your card to "performance" instead of "quality". If that works then go to custom and tweak the settings so you get a good compromise for you computer.

And if you can maintain 25 to 30 FPS running SL you are doing better than most. I'm not sure what you expected from your new card. Some people claim they can get 100 plus FPS in SL........but I wonder about that. A momentary peak of those numbers does not count.......it's the sustained FPS that determines what you are seeing. Plus I'm sure those number require a lot tweaking to get.........and I doubt the effort is worth the results except for "bragging" rights.

A friend had this issue on his 280. Uninstall the graphics driver. Then restart and reinstall the latest driver. Restart again. You should be getting better preformance now.

What driver version do you have? Did you get it from the card manufacturer or directly from Nvidia? What is your OS?

I would recommend using Driver Sweeper from http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/ to uninstall the driver in safe mode, and install the 195.55 driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_195.55.html.

Is the onboard graphics chip disabled in the BIOS and the video connector attached to the PCI card, not the motherboard? That is, unless you have the Hybrid SLI set for power saving mode, but confirm the BIOS settings.

On your set up, it is possible that the onboard graphic chip is active, even if you have connected the monitor to the PCI card. Which would give you the low FPS numbers you are getting. There is also a new BIOS version 1301 available.

Right now I have 191.07. I'm running Vista Home Premium x64. My card is an EVGA GeForce GTX 280. I'm going to clean out my drivers again and update my bios. Cross your fingers!

Have you checked the video settings in the BIOS to be sure that the PCI card is active, not the onboard video?

Exactly what I was wondering. I found a review on the GTX 280 that sort of touches on this. I'm pasting the URL for the review I was skimming but I'm not sure it will bring you to the page where this is discussed in the review........if not, it's the 5th page into the review under the topic "Hybrid Power". It could have a bearing on the overall slow performance. Worth a quick look anyway:
