Hmm... There must be something on that second 'signpost' right after you begin as a new character, because it always crashes my Mac (15" AlBook/1 Ghz/512MB/Radeon 9600 64MB).

And when I say crash, I mean requires holding down the power button until the PB is forced off, regardless of running in Full Screen/Windowed mode, since I can neither cmd-tab or cmd-opt-esc.

Second Life seems -very- cool... but it'd be nice if I could at least get past the intro to see if it's worth the fee.

Have you modified your Preferences at all?

Are you running any other peculiar programs simultaneously?

I know the beta has a tendency to crash, but I don't think I've heard of Force Quit not working and you having to manually reboot the machine.

I recommend working in windowed mode, as it allows cmd-tab.

You may want to try deleting the app and clearing out the cache folder in the App Support folder and try reinstalling.

How are you doing on hard drive space? Perhaps your swap file is being squeezed?

I'd recommend sending a crash log to Linden Labs, but if you have to reboot your machine the log is probably inaccessible.

But I recommend emailing support@secondlife.com and maybe they can give you some instructions on how to submit a crash log.

Good luck.

I still have about 40GB free on my HD, was running either Safari or no other programs when I had crashing issues. I was in windowed mode - I had a hard freeze: no cmd-tab possible.

Though I didn't reinstall SL, in preferences, I seem to have narrowed it down to having 'AGP mode' turned on and/or 'bumpmapping and cloth' turned on. Judging by the general troubleshooting side of the board, it seems to be an issue with ATI cards, non necessarily specific to Macs. Maybe. Anyway, I'll be sending out an email to support after work.
