As soon as I open Second Life, it stalls. The program initialises, then stalls, before the opening/log in screen. This is a new laptop computer, it's specs are: Acer Aspire 5315 Intel Celeron CPU 550 @2.00 Ghz 2.00 Ghz 1GB RAM 32bit operating system. 252MB Mobile Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100 1GB DDR2 120GB HDD Vista Home Basic
This is puzzling me, as I have SL up and running(and have done for well over a year) on my XP desktop machine, which BARELY had enough specs, and this laptop is a bigger, new, computer, which I would have thought would mean that SL would have run even better on. Any ideas I've tried deleting and redownloading SL, running it in XP compatability mode, and running it in Safe Mode, but it's still not happening. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

From: Syra Hynes 252MB Mobile Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100 I would hazard a guess that the above component is your problem. Intel graphics cards aren't very good for gaming. NVidia or ATI cards are the only ones listed on the system requirements list: http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php This is fairly typical for most games which require 3D hardware acceleration. (Which is the vast majority of PC games thesedays.) Some do manage to run SL with certain Intel GPUs though... so it might be worth upgrading your graphics drivers. Maybe even downgrading them, if you've already got the latest.

Btw, I've just noticed that SuezanneC Baskerville has already answered a query with regards this chip: /111/1a/270132/1.html Apparently the drivers and information on this page may be of use: http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intelg31/Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the help. So far, no go. I know other people have managed to get SL going tolerably with my graphics driver, but nothing doing here yet.

There are 3100s and x3100s, I think, and there might be desktop and portable versions of one or both of those, with possibly different results. I have now heard of a desktop 3100 running SL under WinXP, though it did get a warning about being unsupported. You don't say exactly what version of driver you have. You might try turning off object occlusion in the settings.xml (or whatever the settings file for your viewer is called). You would add something like: <!--Enable object culling based on occlusion (coverage) by other objects--> <UseOcclusion value="FALSE"/> in the appropriate place in the file, which means somewhere in the middle, This suggestion was in a year old post in the Intel software forums. I see this suggestion also in the jira: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4330 . Here's a blog post by an Intel employee dealing with Second LIfe : http://softwareblogs.intel.com/2006/10/03/second-life-intel-engagement/ . Here's a page with Intel drivers that might help folks with Intel-SL problems: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-010479.htmI don't have Intel video, fortunately for me.

I have SL running now, although it still isn't logging me in (entirely different problem, I think). I'd actually done the occlusion thing before I read your reply, and that's got me to this point.

Does it get to the login screen now?
How does it fail now?
What error message?
What version of SL and what version of video driver?
What kind of modem?
What kind of router?
Wired or wireless?
What kind of internet service, cable, dsl, or what?
If you haven't turned off your modem and router you might try that.
If you get to the login screen, you might go to preferences, web, clear browser cache.
Can you find your secondlife.log file and see if it has any useful looking error messages?

Yes it is getting to the log in screen, then when I try to log in I get the 'despite our best efforts..." error message, which as far as I can make out from looking around, seems to mean that SL isn't registering my internet connection(Wired BroadBand.DSL/Cable...D-Link DSL-502T Router -The same one I use on the XP machine..just switch them over as needed). I've tried turning off the router and disconnecting it, then reconnecting and starting it. No joy. Haven't tried clearing the cache yet. I'm not on the problematic computer at the moment so I can't check the log file(or clear the cache, for that matter), but I will when I get back on. Thanks for taking the time to help me, I really appreciate it

Syra
You mentioned you laptop is an Acer.
Have you installed any of the software bundled with it or was any of it pre-installed?
Look for edatadecurity! running on your system.
This is a file management system that is known to block (unconfirmed) certain aspects of SL. known issues are uploads and voice but as you can't log in from the log in screen this could also be a problem with it.
If I remember rightly if your video card or drivers are identified as not being compatible you use to get a message to say that "your GC is not compatible or your drivers are out of date". I don't know if this message has changed.
If it is the edatasecurity program that is running on your system that prevents you from accessing SL could you please let us know with a return message here on the forum.
There have recently been a lot of people experiencing problems and all are using Acer system.
