There is currently a bug in 1.4 that appears to cause corruption of object cache data. If you are crashing immediately upon login, or at a fairly high rate, clearing the cache may prevent the crashes from occurring.

To clear the Second Life cache, you need to delete the files in the following folders. <username> refers to the user that you log into the operating system with.

On Windows:
The Second Life cache files are located in:
Documents And Settings\<username>\Application Data\Second Life\cache

Note that Application Data is a hidden folder, so it may not be visible normally.

On Mac:
The Second Life cache files are located in:
~<username>/Library/Application Support/Second Life/cache

Uninstalling and reinstalling on Windows will also clear the cache, but it will also clear your settings file as well.

shouldn't it be:
"clearing the cache may prevent the crashes from occuring."

not:
"clearing the cache may cause the crashes from occuring." ??

Hey Doug (and other developers): Bugs are annoying, yes, but we appreciate your hard work in fixing them, and for developing such a unique game. Kudos guys, keep it up. :)

crashing every time
06-22-2004 15:46
I suspected the cache had something to do with the freezing I get every time, as it happens either after I've been running the client for a while, or when I do data-intensive things like look at the whole map or use the Find window. I use the MacOS client, and when the client dies it locks up my whole GUI. I can still ssh in to my box, but I can't restart the GUI and have to restart the whole machine. Clearing the cache seems to make no difference in the lockup behavior. The 1.4 update has turned SL into a timebomb, and mademe nervous to do too much or stay on too long.

Windowed?
06-22-2004 21:27
My crashes seem to stop when I switch into full-screen mode. A few seconds after switching back to windowed, the GUI hard-locks, like clockwork.

An OpenGL issue, maybe? 10.3.4 had a graphics update, as I recall.

I was having this issue last nite. Cleared cache. Still crashing. Reinstalled SL. Still crashing. I gave up and went to the bad place (bed). I logged back in today and no crashing. Ran just fine all evening. Weird. What makes it weirder is that my girlfriend is having these same type of crashes tonite, yet she was fine last nite. I also have a friend who was experiencing this last nite. My girlfriend and he both cleared caches, and ultimately reinstalled SL. No go. Still crashing. :(

Nope. Still not able to log on here. Though it was working just fine yesterday. Maybe there's more to the problem than just the contents of that folder.

*edit: After reinstaling secondlife, and deleting the entire secondlife folder (with the cache info in it), Second Life let me in. Not sure whethere this was because of the deletion or due to dumb luck.

Aggravation continues

I've had no luck either. I freeze in game shortly after login. Speed testing shows high performance levels. I can't interact with others, participate in events, build anything remotely complicated. Quite frustrating. Spent the last week or so looking for memory leaks of anything that would slow me down. Please let us know if this problem is still being researched.

I have also not been able to stay in game since the new version(s). Shortly after logging in, SL begins to "flicker" -- all windows, inworld text labels, and certain elements in world briefly vanish, then reappear. The flashes occur every 10-20 seconds, and after a few minutes of this, the program (newview.exe) crashes to desktop. Time inworld ranges from five to ten minutes.

Attempted fixes and incidental changes, none of which fixed the problem:
- fiddled with SL preferences (windowed/fullscreen, display options, connection options, etc.)
- deleted cache (repeatedly)
- reinstalled SL
- degraded/upgraded video card drivers (GF4 Ti4600)
- upgraded mobo drivers (NForce2)
- flattened and reinstalled OS (Win XP Pro)
- installed SATA RAID, ran on various drives
- increased airflow, tested case temps

Oh yes, and submitted many error reports after crashes.

Any further suggestions would be helpful. The really annoying bit is that I meant to spend less time in world...but by choice! Now that I am FORCED to stay out of SL, I must get the damn thing working again!

Try toggling Debug -> Rendering -> Fast UI.

If you don't have a Debug menu, hit Ctrl-Alt-D first.

How I wish it were that simple.

(Okay, not simple...didn't try that before. But it didn't work.)
