In previous discussions on this forum regarding audio equipment, we've talked about the unfortunate tendency of ASIO devices to crackle under 64-bit operating systems, when more than 4GB of RAM is present. Today, I got a nice surprise from Tascam, and figured I should spread the word. They've solved the problem in their new 1.7 driver for their FW series DAW consoles (and presumably for their other devices as well, although I haven't checked). I'm guessing other manufacturers will follow suit soon, if they haven't already.
I just downloaded and tested with my FW-1082, and it works beautifully. I can finally let my 6-year-old XP x86 machine go out to pasture, and throw the full power of my Vista x64 machine at my audio work. What a difference this is going to make.
Sound engineers, DJ's, and anyone else out there who uses a DAW (digital audio workstation), I'm sure I don't have to tell you what a significant breakthrough this is. It's long overdue.
