I downloaded Second life from the website, installed correctly, but when i try to open it, it won't open. it goes through detecting hardware and such, but doesn't open. When i check my processes, i see it's running, but theres no way for me to select it. how do i open Second Life in this situation..?

I'm not sure, but the first thing I would try is simply restarting your pc.

if that doesn't work try uninstalling sl, everything, and reinstall it.

Check your firewall and antivirus programs to make sure they are not blocking SL from starting. That issue has, to my knowledge, never been an SL issue. If you can't get to the login screen, it's something local (or between you and LL's servers) that is causing your problem.

So far, nothing is working.. the log in screen doesn't even show up. it brings up the gray box telling me it's detecting hardware and such, then nothing. it shows up as a process in my task manager, but thats it..

you're apparently crashing at the detecting hardware phase of the program launch. i would say check for video drivers being up to date. Also, you could be experiencing your firewall and windows blocking SL's attempts to access the servers.........or the servers response back to your computer. Firewalls and anti virus's could cause that.

Is this the first time you've tried to run SL?

Well, i've got DSL, Windows XP, 2.93 GHz, 960 MB of RAM, screen resolution is good. The only problem would have to be my graphics card.. Right now it's a RADEON 9200 PRO.. the other card in my computer is an ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 series.. I'm looking at my display adapters at the moment, and i notice a yellow exclamation point at the icon ATI Radeon 200 series. ::shrugs::

If you have your 9200 Pro installed and it is the graphics adapter you are using then that yellow exclamation mark means there is an issue with that device. I would go and disable whichever adapter you are not using...........or better yet, go into your BIOS and disable it there. It might part of your problem..........two graphics hardware devices being seen when SL launches. It's also important to make sure you have only one driver installed........the one you are using for the device. Uninstall or delete all the others. This is especially important if the devices are of the same make...........like both being ATI.

Oh........editing to say:

That 9200 is proably barely able to run SL satisfactorily. I had a 9250 a couple years ago and it was slowly losing ground to SL's viewers demand on it.

two things first...
1-the 9200 is a vga card on an AGP slot right?
2- the xpress200 is an intergrated graphics processor (IGP)on your mobo.

They are both kinda the same..

The xpress200 is used for onboard videosupport...meaning your mobo(motherboard) has a monitor connector of its own so that it does not need a extra vga card...

If you planning on putting a VGA card on a mobo which already has onboard video support you must first check if you need to change a BIOS setting or Jumper setting on the motherboard to make it clear that it will be using a VGA card now instead of the intergrated Graphics Processor xpress200..

Then if you have checked these BIOS and/or Jumper setting and corrected them you still might need to instal the igp catalyst drivers set.

The drivers found at AMD : http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

AMD advices to use these drivers for IGP xpress200:

ATI Catalystâ„¢ 8.8 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition - Motherboard/IGP Drivers:
-Display Driver
-Catalyst Control Center
-GART Driver
-South Bridge Driver

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp

But looking for a 9200 driver at AMD it advices to use:

Catalystâ„¢ 6.11 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition
-Display Driver
-Catalyst Control Center
-WDM Drivers

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeon-prer300-xp.html

So what have you installed and etc..?

Both , the 9200 and the xpress200. are not realy able to run sl and only 960 MB support isnt that great aswell..

Could you tell me what kind of mobo you have? does it support surroundview aswell?

I had a 9700pro befor but it wasnt able to run sl normaly...

i had a similar problem when i first installed SL. When I would start it it would go through "finding hardware" and then i kept getting and error message saying SL must close. bla bla. Anyways what eventually after alot of trail and error worked for me was there was a conflict with Quicktime. So i uninstalled quicktime and voila! It fired right up. Good luck!

Sorry about the long wait.. got frustrated and kinda left SL be for a while..

Guys, the problem isn't that it isn't running well.. it isn't running AT ALL.. I try to open it, it goes past the whole detecting hardware and such, then nothing. No screen comes up, it dosn't show up on my task bar, and in the task manager it doesn't appear, but i do have a SL process running. It's like i open it, then it goes completely invisible.

You could respond to the posts people made.

You appear to have a problem of some kind with an onboard graphics processor, and it was suggested that you disable it.

::Shrugs:: well, is there anything i can in the BIOS To fix it? i checked there just now, see that my comp is using the card thats in the PCI slot(which is the 9200), so basically the mobo card just seems to be sitting there.

Quick question. If i disable the xpress 200, and it turns out the comp is running on it, will that screw up my monitor?

most of the reason i havn't responded was that i was waiting for an answer that didn't require fiddling with parts of the computer i'm nervous about, which is anything sensitive, cause i always fear i'm going to mess up.. ::Sighs, nuzzling everyone, ears wiggling:: When i get a response that it's safe, i'll disable the exclamation mark.

If you don't know how to get to your CMOS setup check your users manual that came with your computer. It's usually simply hitting your "delete" key before you OS begins to load (that part of the boot precess where you see the splash screen) and after you've turned on your computer. It will open the setup utility to configure your computer to your liking. I know it can be scarey at first but if you do not "save" before you exit the utility nothing will change.

Look through the different sections and see the options available to you to change. Your mouse will not work so you have to use the arrow keys, enter, escape, etc to navigate.......there are instructions at the top of each page. Look for your graphics.....if there is an option to disable the onboard or intergrated graphics then disable it and save and exit. If there is not an option then that means you do not have to do that.......your motherboard software senses the installed card and disables the onboard and enables the card that is installed in your machine. I think most newer boards do that now days.....though I did have to disable this one and it's a newer mb. Just remember how you got to the page where you made any changes so you can go back if need be. If your computer acts wierd or refuses to boot then go back and put everything back like it was and you'll be right back where you are now.

It's not as scarey as you might think. You would have to do some really wild tinkering to get it so you could not get back to your setup utility. There is also a "default" save/exit option if all else fails. But using that will likely change some of the setting the manufacturer made when they put the computer together so you might have things not working that were working before you chose 'default".........so don't do that unless you just have to do it. That is not likely if you use a little common sense though.

Editing because I forgot to asnwer your last question.
No, disabling the onboard graphics will not screw up your monitor. Worse thing that will happen is that you OS will pick up some generic low grade driver to produce some sort of graphics display so you can use your computer. Usually some resolution like 600 x 480 at 16 bit color. It will look like a monochrome monitor of 15 years ago.......generally crappy looking but good enough to do some trouble shooting.

Okay.. I've already messed around in my BIOS to set my videocard as the one i'm using, not the the onboard card. I did that a year ago to set up a game i wanted to play, and it ran the game faster, but everything else ran slower..

Well, Off i go to try this then Wish me Luck. ::Clicks Disable::

::about 2 minutes later:: Ok.. it's disabled.. and still the same problem. It goes through it's detecting hardware thing, then Nothing. Still shows up in my processes.. but thats it.
