You will probably find that the biggest upgrades in recent cards are to comply with DirectX 10, which SL is a OpenGL platform.
RamDac and Core speeds are relevant, but you won't gain much eye candy per buck with the latest cards when using SL. A slightly lower rated card 8600GTX with greater memory maybe the way to go. JMHO

the 8800GT is the better card for the money. The new 8800 GT series has almost as good performance as the GTX. Check out reviews on the gamer websites.

You might find this thread on the 8800 vs. the 8600, from 2 weeks ago, useful: /327/48/240193/1.html.

Bear in mind the vast majority of advancements with GC's over the past year has been in the DirectX market, not the OpenGL. SL is an OpenGL platform, so gains nothing to very little from many of these upgrades.
The things to look at are .. Power consumption, going for a GC based solely on speed gains, can be thwarted by costs when you find you have to upgrade your power supply as well. The mixture of RamDac, Memory and Core speeds are not all equal, look at interface pipeline bandwidth.. 256bit is twice as fast as 128bit. Actual memory on the card as opposed shared memory (some card manufactures quote total memory which includes onboard memory and addressed shared system memory).
