Everything you see in SL is downloaded to your viewer. That means if you stand in one spot and spin your camera or avatar around you download everything that comes into "view"...........that does not mean it has to rezz for you. Just everything that is within your set draw distance when your camera pans past it. An avatar walks into your draw distance.........it downloads. Every gesture.....downloaded. Every chat, IM, goup notice......all downloaded. In short, everything that happens within your viewing area is downloaded to your viewer.

There isn't much you can do to help that............lessen your draw distance is the only thing that comes to mind for me.

If I was stuck in Australia and had the means to leave, I would for this reason alone :)

You could try increasing the Second Life cache to the maximum size, in Preferences, Network.

You could stay in the same place as much as possible.

Turn off the music and video as much as you can stand.

I live across the sea from you Kath, so is even worse for us here as we got distance lag to make up as well. Its the avatars and what they doing that is the download biggie. Try stay away from busy regions during peaktimes for US and Europe users, unless is really important. When shopping go in your late evening. America in bed then mostly and Europe eating breakfast so you not bump into as many other avatars at that time.

Also do what Suzanne says about radio and video. A radiostream at 128k on all the time uses up lots of bandwidth. Also voice if you using it. Voice can add to your SL when you with your frends but using up all your monthly allowance in a couple of weeks listening/chatting to people who mostly strangers aways in public areas is not the best use of your money. Not if you get bumped down to dialup by your ISP for the last week of each month because you used up all your allowance by doing this.

I usually use SL for 6-8 hours per day, usually with music streaming most of that time, and my experience is that it pretty consistently uses close to 1GB per day with that level of usage.
