What version of SL ? The regular or the release candidate, and what is the version number?

Where did you get your driver from, and what version is it?

You might try uninstalling the driver, rebooting and don't let windows install a driver, then run a driver cleaner, then install your desired driver.

Sometimes older drivers work when the new ones you are always being told to get don't.

Whichever version of SL you are using, you could try using the other one.

Hey, Frop. I have a couple suggestions. The first being that according to nVidia I should be using that same driver that was listed for you (my card is GF8600GT. I tried using it (though I had no problems at the time.....just thought it would be best to have the latest).....it did not work on SL. I have Vista Home Premium (32 bit). I back tracked on driver versions until I found one that did work (search the archive on nVidia's site). The one that works for me is 169.25. You might give it a try.......it will work with any 8000 series card. I know almost always the latest driver is the one you should expect to work the best....but that is not always the case.

And my second suggestion is to go back to nVidia's site and down load that driver to your hard drive......don't use any auto-installers to do it for you. I always run my anti-virus scanner across any file I download...even "trusted sites" like nVidia. Then uninstall your current driver (and any other nVidia driver you may have listed in your Add/Remove). You will need to restart your computer......but when Vista boots up decline to search or find a driver for the "new hardware detected" dialog that will pop up. Then install the driver you downloaded from nVidia.......you'll need to restart again. You'll also probably have to clean up your desktop since when you uninstalled your driver Windows picked some generic off the wall driver at some rediculous resolution and scattered you desktop all over the place. :)

Try SL again. If you get the same message then you can use the archive like I did to try older versions until you find the one that works. It's a little tedious since you need to uninstall the driver that did not work each time. I think it took me about an hour to find the driver that works for me.

And, my advice to anyone. If you are not having problems with drivers (or at least suspect, with some justification, that it is a driver problem), don't "upgrade" just to say you've done it......driver installation is not as cut and dried as most software installations. Mess one up and you got headaches. That's for any driver......audio, video, printer, scanner, even your mouse. That old adage: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies in spades to drivers.

This is my moms computer and she gets really pissed if I do stuff like that so im not even going to bother. Im not too good with computers anyways ill most likely screw upp somehow. But, I do remember a while back I downloaded the wrong driver onto my computer. I wonder if that could be the problem.... Does anyone here know how to find the drivers in computers? So I can remove them. My searches never seem to come up with any results...
