you can call Linden Lab to get your account reactivated, as for you land, you should have sold it rather than just abandoned it. It's gone, you'll have to buy a new lot elsewhere.

You can still login to your account at http://secondlife.com/account and there should be an option to reactivate. It costs about $10 USD though. You need to reactivate within 30 days to ensure your inventory isn't lost.

Abandoned land is somewhat more complicated. You could ring Linden Lab and beg for mercy I suppose.

If you didn't abandon the land prior to cancelling your account, it might be worth checking to see if you still own it. If not, LL might just return it to if you call them (assuming you lost the land within the past 24-48 hours). They've done stranger things. ;)

What determines if an account can be reactivated or not, besides obviously being deactivated due to serious violations, etc?

I know the accounts are purged of inventory after a while of being cancelled, but does it matter how long an account has been defunct before the name can be reactivated?

@BigMac

The avatar remains untouched and ready for reactivation (pending cancel) without loss for about 30 days, during this time inworld objects and owned things (including land when not explicitly abandoned if I got it right) still remain. The inventory is kept for even longer time, I think it was about 60 days. After that period the avatar is finally cancelled and inventory cleared, so one would need a new avatar to restart.
