Please post up the hardware specs of your computer, SL is extremely graphics intensive so requires a good graphics card. The other thing you can try is at the loginin screen go into EDIT>PREFERENCES>GRAPHICS and set everything to minimum.

A hard crash that produces a BSOD or restarts your computer often damages critical files. First thing I would do is try to find out why the system crashed like that in the first place. Heat probably causes more computer lockup, crashes, and restarts than anything else........but it's not the only thing that can cause the problem (virus and/or maleware are also common reasons). A good and thorough virus scan and maleware scan of the computer would be somthing to do. Remove the sides of your computer if you are using a desktop and use a can of compressed air to blow out all the dust that has accumulated inside over the weeks/months/years. While doing that check for all your fans turning freely by blowing the air through the blades (it does not cause harm for the fans to spin backward........as long as they turn freely) and starting up your computer while the side is still off to see if they all start up.........but don't run your computer like that for any extended period of time since a good case is designed to have that side on to get the proper airflow and cooling. The CPU and graphics card (GPU) are the two main devices that will heat up the most with a program like SL (GPU will heat up the most). If you are using a laptop you can blow through the ventlation holes to get as much dust out as possible (it won't get it all but it should get enough out to help). A coolpad or something similar is always a good then to use when SL or any other graphically and computationally intensive program like SL.

Then I would do an uninstall of SL and after that is completed do a search for any file related to SL and manutally delete them from your computer. Get a fresh download of the viewer and reinstall it. There's a pretty good chance the problem will still exist but it's a first step. People have "solved" a problem of SL not launching by using an alternate (third party) viewer.........so that might be somthing to consider.

If nothing helps list your computer specs, your ISP and it's advertised speed, the operating system you are using. The most important devices are system RAM, GPU, CPU, and if you've upgraded to a higher end GPU then the sustained wattage output of your power supply is good to know. Overloaded PSU's have caused crashes like you are experiencing.

If you could let us know the model of your computer, and the CPU, graphics card, and RAM amount, and operating system, I may be able to step you through this.

I would recommend that first you uninstall Second Life, and then download the latest graphics driver directly from Nvidia, ATI, or Intel (whichever your computer uses). Then reinstall Second Life and see if it works.
