ATI x1800 on Vista -- FLASHING

Been playing SL for over a year with this card after modding the drivers to get it to work in SL. Suddenly, in the last few months, I get a recurrent "flashing" which is obviously the video card, and makes it VERY hard to play. I've spoken to a friend with the same laptop and she's having an identical problem, so it's obviously due to one of the multiple SL updates. I've been unable to find updated drivers that will work..

Specs are as follows:

ATI Mobility Radeon X1800
Driver version 8.380
Vista Home Basic
Alienware Area-51 M5790 laptop

Please help!

Can you produce a video or screenshots of the flashing?

Is the whole screen flashing, or individual prims, or what?

Have you tried any alternate viewers like the Cool Viewer, Nicholaz viewer, etc.?
