Hi guys & gals,

quick (maybe dumb) question.

i have SL on my laptop which i use hardwired to my router.

however

I am going away for the weekend, and there will be no place for me to hardwire to.

so onto questions.

1: is it possible to use my mobile phone as a modem for my laptop
2: will i get charged by my mobile phone company for this service
3: will accessing SL be taken from my download limit (bear in mind, the client is already on my laptop)

thanks in advance

I work for a cellphone provider and you will need to have either a data cable from your cell to the laptop or set it up through bluetooth if both have that capability. You will also need to have a Laptop Tether Data Connect type plan on your cell service for it to work properly, be prepared to spend around $60 a month for that, at least where I work as you will more than likely need unlimited data. I recommend calling your service provider for options as I can only say what I know about ours.

Is it possible to use the cell phone as a modem?
Yes. I did it with 2g data connect (about 80k download speed) using my cell phone, bluetoothed to my laptop. Obviously, at 80k, I had to dial down the network bandwidth and, in general, avoid going to busy places. But yes, it worked. You may get better or worse speeds.

Will you get charged?
This is a cell phone company we're talking about. They will charge you for breathing if they can. In this case, there are two possible charges that may apply. There is the direct data cost. Research with your provider to see what charges apply. You'll probably want unlimited data though for an SL connection. Now, beyond that, at least ATT also charges differently for what they call "tethered" access. That is to say, "unlimited to your mobile device" is not the same as "unlimited to a real computer". AT&T asks an additional $9.95/mo (last I did it) for unlimited, tethered access ($59.95/mo total). That is what is legal and per contract. If you don't pay for the "tethered" option, they probably won't catch you. But if they do, expect bills ranging in the $1000 and up amount. Note that at least with AT&T, you can add and remove these features on a month by month basis. So if you only need it for one trip, it'll cost you $60.

Will it take from my "download limit"
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. They will definitely charge you for bits transferred, both up and down. That's why an "unlimited, tethered" plan is probably the way to go for SL

you can probably do it

but cell phone providers charge by the bit do just a few min in SL would rack up more charges than just getting their mobile internet card for the next 10 years

if your going to a hotel they probably have wifi you can leech off of from your room

if your desperate, copper.net has uber cheap dialup .... it might take you 20 min to load up an area but your on
