Traveling on dialup?

Hey, I was thinking, since I go out of town so often (at least once every other week), but my work only runs from 0700-0900 and 1600-1800, I might be able to play SL on the road. However, when I'm on the road I usually only have a 56k connection. Granted, it's a good one that usually gets 48kbps or higher (provided the hotel's wiring doesn't suck), but it's still dialup. Do you think I might be able to play for short periods of time on this dialup? While dialing in, I would primarily just be scripting and otherwise working at home -- stuff that doesn't require a lot of travel, and therefore would require less texture caching... of course I think my "offline sandbox" idea (see Feature Suggestions) would be great for this ;)

Set up a computer at your house on your DSL Connection. Use your laptop to call the house and remotely take over that machine. The only thing transmitted between the 2 systems is the video data. I think you can use PC-Anywhere to do this.

Phil,

I've done it. I've played SL via dial-up.

It was incredibly painful.

Granted it was a couple of months ago, and there have been lots of improvements since then, so it's possible that it would only be quite painful now as opposed to incredibly painful.

rofl, well i'll give it a shot. i mainly want it just to do some scripting while i'm on the road, so hopefully it won't be too terribly laggy...

I believe the main issue with 56k is the packet loss, correct? because of the constant streaming dialup just can't keep up with the non-stop demand.
