Video Card Memory Option: 128 MB greyed out

I searched the forum before writing this and could only find one reference to this that was outdated (for a former SL build last October.) I now have a NVidia GeForce FX 5200 AGP card with 128 MB DDR. My BIOS shows that indeed the 128 MB is reading. But in my SL game perferences the 128 MB and 256 MB are both greyed out in the Video Card Memory Option. Obviously the 256 wouldn't be accessible but why not the 128 MB?

You can't choose more video card memory than 1/4 of your system main memory. I don't know why this is, but it's the way things are.

How much RAM does your system have? I have a GeForce FX 5600 256MB card and I needed at least 1GB to be able to use it.

I have a Pentium4, 2.40 GHz with 256 MB of RAM. So I'm now guessing...too much card for the RAM?

Ram is pretty cheap(reletive to most componants). If you can try to pop in antoher 256 mb? Depending on your system it may cost as little as $50

Yes, but like Baba Yamamoto said RAM is a lot cheaper than a new video card.

I recently upgraded my system memory from 256 to 384, and this ungrayed the 128mb option for my 128DDR Radeon.

But using more video ram in SL isn't always a good thing. The game will look better, but it may run slower. And texture corruption also happens more often on some video cards when using more of their onboard memory. I can leave mine set to 128 with no problems, as long as I don't check the AGP option.

More importantly, the increased system memory hugely improved SL's overall performance.

I use the whole 256MB on my GeForce FX card and have had no problems with picture corruption, but that could be just because I have an NVIDIA instead of a ATI card. (No rub-in intended )

i have this problem as well. except in dxdiag (i know we dont run dx, but its a nice debugger) it says 64mb as well.

nvidia geforce4 ti4200 128mb

newest geforce drivers 5.3.0.3
newest mobo drivers (forget off hand, just upgraded today)

only thing i dont have is a new bios flash. (fdd controller went down on the mobo, no disk drives for me, hence limiting my flash ability)


Hell, its time i drop some ram into this thing anyway. its worth a shot.
