I have always run SL in full screen mode. But recently I found that when I alt tab and switch back and forth, things look funny. People (including myself) go grey, certain textures become magic and I can see thro them. If I stay out of SL long enough it crashes.
I switched to windowed mode and none of this happens. I can do whatever else I want and no prob.
So looks like I am a windows mode person now, althought I really liked the full screen, didnt want anything else to distract me from my inworld state of mind.
I am using the latest drivers 4.3.something with my vid card geoforce TI 4400 with 128megs, XP os.

We have similar setups, I'll try it tonight and see if I get the same thing.

Thats standard when switching back into SL, everything, including all textures, reloads. For that period of time, default (grey) and blurry textures is all that you see. It usually goes away after everything is loaded, which should be less then a minute. SL Crashing while your switched out, thats another problem... I thought they fixed that in 0.7... try reinstalling or downgrading your drivers to 41.09 or something like that.

What I am referring to is not what I think you are saying is standard. This is a new problem. I have not seen it before, it just started. Probs a combo of the latest drivers and client.

The next release will have a substantial number of fixes for this sort of thing - I think there's a good chance they'll solve the problems you're having.
[Edit:]
Downgrading your detonator drivers to 41.09 is only recomended for GeForce 2 and GeForce 4MX series cards, and only to work around the swiss-cheese avatar bug. People with other nvidia cards should be able to use the latest drivers without any driver-induced problems.
Also, 43.x is no longer the latest, as of last week nvidia is up to 44.03, which seems to work fine so far.

Actually, I was a slacker and never updated mine. I need to stay at 41.09 so that I can have the same drivers that I am using at work. Anyway, it kind of happens with the old drivers too, so I guess it wouldn't help for people to go back. I need more computers.
