I've recently moved to another area of the country, and suddenly I'm having SL troubles.
My Avatar will stop responding in mid-action. It continues along on the last input - so if I jump, my avatar will continue to float higher and higher. I can't stop my avatar, change direction, or anything. I will continue to float out of the sim. Others have told me that they see me "freeze" in the middle of whatever I'm doing, and if I am in battle, they can still kill me. Others do not see me floating away, while that is what my client is showing me.
I'm running Windows XP; SP2 NVIDIA 7600 GS
What is going on, and how can I fix it! At this rate, I can only take a few steps, and hope for the best. It's no fun to explore or interact!

I sounds like you are losing your connection to the LL servers. Most of the time resetting your modem and/or router solves that problem. It also could be your ISP so maybe a phone call to them will help. You also might be getting excessive packet loss.......check the lag meter while in world, if packet loss is in the yellow or red go to preferrences and lower your bandwidth until you stop getting packet loss.
Without more information on your computer and setup that's about all I can think of at the moment.

Peggy,
I'm not sure what info would be useful in telling you my setup - I'll gladly tell you what you need to know, though.
I have tried much of what you've suggested already. I've reset the modem - multiple times, Reloaded the SL viewer, updated my graphics driver, rolled back my graphics driver, called my ISP (3x!), the stats bar does not show any packet loss. *sigh*

From: Zenith Contepomi I'm not sure what info would be useful in telling you my setup Start off with your RAM and CPU speed. It might have a bearing on if you are wireless or hardwired too. Is this computer a laptop or desktop? When was the last time you cleaned out the case? Edit to add: Try going here: http://www.speedtest.net/run the test and post the results back here.

- RAM - 2.0 GB - I'm not sure where to find CPU speed... - This desktop is hardwired to the internet. (ironically, the laptop running Vista, on a wireless connection doesn't have this problem, just really laggy... Different graphics card, too.) - I cleaned out the case and made sure all components were seated properly when I first noticed a problem.

You shouldn't be having much trouble with that computer. Try going to nVidia's site and download the latest driver for you card. I just went and found the most recent for you: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.19_whql.htmlIf you find you need that driver, be sure to uninstall the older one before you install the new one. I never use any autoinstall program for drivers........I suggest you save to your hard drive and run the installer from there. Also, anti virus programs sometimes interferr with with driver installations since drivers mess with the operatiing system's registry. I'm thinking even if you have updated to that driver recently and you did not uninstall first then maybe get a fresh copy and try again.........uninstalling first this time.

Ok. I've uninstalled the driver, and reinstalled the latest one with no success. I still "float away."
I've also changed internet providers, and now have: - 5017 download - 1190 upload
Help!

And you say your laptop is wireless and does not have this issue? Are you connected through a router? Check for your network interface card update.......they use drivers too.
And, try logging into a different sim instead of where your normally log into. Try the sim I live in..............Philudoria.

It happens in Philudoria, too. I've updated the NIC driver...

You never have said if you are connected via a router. Nor have you indicated you have rebooted your modem. Do both.........it's a common problem. Rebooting both the router and modem is very simple. Shut down your computer, unplug your modem and/or router from the electrical source for about 3 minutes, and plug them back in, when all the lights settle down on the devices reboot your computer and try SL again.
You are describing a very classic case of loss of your connection to the LL severs.......also known as packet loss. There are many things that can cause the problem, but about 80% of the time it is one or both the modem and router needing to be rebooted.

You state at the beginning of the post you have moved area, could there be a clue to the problem there? Have you always had the problem in your new location or has SL ever worked fine from there?
Which country are you in, has your ISP / telephone / network provider changed?

I am not connected through a router.
I've rebooted the modem many, many times.
I've had this problem since I arrived in my new home. NEW ISP, of course, as I went from west coast to east coast of the USA.
Very frustrating!
**New update** Upgraded OS to Vista. Now everything works like a charm. Was there an upgrade at some point that made XP incompatable?
