Linking Scrolling Blinds

This might be more appropriate for the scripting forum but I think the problem has more to do with how I'm linking than the scripting.

I purchased Outy's curtain drop retractor to have scrolling blinds for a build of mine. It works great except when I try to link it to the hut. When I do that and then click the blinds to scroll they jump out away from the hut in addition to scrolling as they should.

If it was just for myself I wouldn't worry about linking it but this is a build that was a special order for someone and one that I plan to sell to others.

Any suggestions what I can do? Btw, I'm a builder not a scripter, so please talk down to me. :p

Sounds like your script is moving the blinds relative to the position of the root prim, so when you change that they go wonky on you. Similar to doors?

But not knowing the product, won't speculate further ... I'm sure someone wiser will be along shortly!

Of course, the simplest way around all such problems is not to link them to the build and use rez-faux, bulder's buddy or the like.

Thank you Nika,

I did a little searching and read some old posts about rez-faux and others like it. I realize it holds the items together for initial rezzing, but knowing that noone rezzes a house and has it land exactly the way they want it, what about when they then move it? Does it all stay together then or will they have to move the individual pieces?

I've had a lot of problems with llSetPrimitiveParams moving stuff around when it shouldn't. Doors seem to jostle skyboxes about, etc.

Perhaps you're experiencing the same thing?

And does anyone have any advice short of using a "stay put" script in the root object?

The creator most likely linked the object together and has them reacting in a certain order. It sounds like they are using the link number and when you change the link numbers by adding a linked object or unlink it and then relink it out of the original order it throws the script off.

I have a house that I purchased from another creator that does the same thing. When I click the doors they slide out one after the other until all the door sections are to the side leaving an opening. When I linked another object or modified the build and unlinked/relinked everything it no longer worked and I got the samme reults you are describing.

If you cannot see the script text you will most likely have to contact the creator for help or rez a new one it it's copyable.

Hey Bradley *waves*

lol i didn't realize when i answered that it was you. I'd love you to stop by my place sometime so you build all the forest-related content that I'm too lazy to do :) *evil plan*

With rez-faux, yes it is unlinked when rezzed, so you'd need to select it all to move it.

I've also seen complex builds that very cleverly put the doors and windows all in a single linkset with their rotations all relative to a single centrally placed root prim. Works OK if everthing is build squarely aligned to a grid; I would think that if you have doors or windows on a curved surface or something this would be a nightmare.

@MadameG: thanks for mentioning that, I'm just doing some linked messaging for buildings, good thing to avoid!

Heya Nika!

A scripting buddy came over and was able to help with the problem in a matter of minutes. Problem solved and works beautifully.

I'd be happy to come by anytime and take a look. I've been collecting ideas for the forest concept. :)
