So when I upgraded my PC i STUPIDLY made a switch from Nvidia to ATI.
I'm on a Gigabyte ATI HD4850 card.
Put it simply, SL won't run with it. Yes I've disabled VBO, makes no diff. It'll login fine. Things will be fine for a short while, then major triangles followed by crash. Sometimes it just crashes straight away.
Temperature shows GPU core doesn't go above 56C, well within its safe range.
This is with Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit, core i7920, Gigabyte EX58-UD5 mobo.
So is anyone out there having luck with an ATI HD4000 series graphics card and SL?
I tried Drivers that came with card, latest drives from Gigabyte website, then latest from ATI, makes no difference.
I'm about ready to smash this card into a billion pieces and get an NVidia again, ARGGHH!!

Try Boy Lane's Rainbow Viewer with the SSE2 patch. It's two downloads (the viewer and the patch) and you may need to copy some files from the LL SL directory. http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/

Sadly I tried that but said a bunch of .dll files were needed for loading, so I copied all the .dll's from the main second life viewer directory. Now when I click on Rainbow viewer it just does nothing! lol. I must be cursed Still waiting to hear from anyone thats using an ATI HD4000 series fine with SL viewer with VBO turned off.

I think Rainbow Viewer needs to be started from the shortcut instead of launching the program itself.

I GOT SL TO WORK!!! I downloaded the Snowglobe viewer and that one runs fine no crashes at all! (so far...) Kept VBO off, but turned on anisotropic filtering and anti-alias, runs super smooth no problems. All Linden need to do now is take a good look at whats going on in the snowglobe code and pass that on over to the official viewer to keep the ATI owners happy
