I'm now running on a 512mb ram and my movements on SL are not really smooth to say the least. Hence, I was wondering if upgrading will help.

You mean getting more RAM?
ABSOLUTELY!!!! Well, unless the rest of the machine is complete crap. You'll notice a nice difference going to 1GB and a very nice difference going to 2GB. _____________________

ram will help a lot...but combo it up with a graphics card, and you will see a big difference...I did that, and there is a signifigant increase in performance.

I am running off 2 gigs of ram with an NVidia 9500 GT 512mb graphics card, processor is a pentium dual core running at 2.0 ghz...i am at full graphics including water ripples.....I have lag when there are alot of people in a sim. Zero lag elsewhere....
I am gonna put 6 more gigs of ram in my current system, So i can further my draw distance... But yea, Ram will help if your graphics card and processor are pretty current.........You'd want a load of ram if your graphics is intergrated |

On this subject, re more ram and making SL run better.
How much difference does the amount of ram your graphics card have make? Say a card with 256 or 312Mb against something with 512 or 768mb on it. Does this make any difference? |

I am a rookie in the PC Technician field, I build my own pc's.....
There are many factors on how sl runs. operating system, ram processor etc etc.. if you have vista and are running off 1 gb of ram. SL will be laggy. Cause Vista eats up alot of ram just to run.......... Your Graphics card odviously comes into play....128 VS 256 or 512mb does have a huge difference.....to run sl at a good rate your gonna need at least 256mb graphics card and 2gigs of ram......The 128, 256, 512 is the ram its using to show the graphics on the game. Plus the ram you have on your system........If you have an intergrated graphics card. That means your card is using the ram on your system, That slows it down ALOT...The less ram you have on a graphics card..You'd want more on your system to make up for the loss on the card...You also have to consider the other programs your running on your pc..... Here is a short video i made in sl a few months ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E82HQfKyRqM Thats with my 512mb Graphics card with 2 gigs of ram....... As far as processors go, I'd recommend a minimum dual core......Celeron processors are office program processors.......Crappy for anything else.....You want at least 2.0 ghz |

Yep, you can't have too much RAM, and it's pretty cheap nowdays too/ Once you go above 3.5Gb you need to be running Vista, XP doesn't see it otherwise. But still I did notice slight improvement going from 2Gb to 4Gb. Some PC's will only handle RAM sticks installed in pairs too.
