More system specs might be useful. What operating system, service pack level, brand and model of computer, if its' a homebrew computer, what motherboard, what video card, what version video driver, how much ram, how much video ram, stuff like that. Have you tried doing a search for "atikmdag" the forums or on google? Have you made any changes to your system, added new memory, updated drivers etc.? Have you gone to jira.secondlife.com and searched for atikmdag? Here's a thread on a different forum about problems related to atikmdag: http://www.repairyourpcnow.com/resources/atikmdag-has-stopped-responding.php ?

im running core2 x9650, 4 gig of 1600mhz ddr3 ram, Radeon HD 3870X2, vista u;timate 64 bit. Everything is up to date, latest drivers, pc is only 6 months old and this stupid game crashes all the time on it. Standing still, tabbed out of it, trying to move... anything... it just locks up and crashes. when is this going to be sorted?

It most likely will all get sorted when the graphics card manufavturers develop drivers that support OpenGL to the extent that programs like SL require. Having a 64 bit operating system only makes it a little more difficult for you. I would suggest you go to ATI's website and find drivers that are from one month to six months old. Download them to your HD (save them) and start the tedious process of stepping back the versions one at a time until you find one that works.
Unless LL is going to revert SL to an earlier state of development (wihich won't happen) then your only hope is your card manufacturer for a fix. It's the developers lacking in the OpenGL support that is the problem (most of their efforts are toward DirectX)......not Linden Lab.
