Im no programmer but I think within my limited knowlegde on program updates, that an update is just that---an update on the existing program. In otherwords portions of the existing older version still remain in your system while other portions are changed.
If I understand it correctly, when Linden Labs make an update the client is rewritten in some sorts, so maybe just an auto update or up date patch on the existing program wont work that way?

It'll work, all you have to do is have a second progam download the new client exe to replace the old one, along with any other new files that are needed. btw, I am a programmer  |

We're not including an auto-updater in the upcoming 0.3 release, but there's a good chance you'll see one in the future.
