Sorry to post this here but I don't have SL access right now. I think I signed up for the Bad Geometry Wiki but I don't know the rules / etiquette of adding info and I don't want to go smashing my way in there when I may be full of it.

Under Known Bugs in the Things that make the client go bump in the night section it says:

Compiling a script that consists only of a comment (//) crashes the client.

I think that's incomplete. I'm pretty sure the problem occurs if you compile a script whose last line consists only of a comment. Of course, a script that consists only of a comment also has a last line that consists only of a comment but the following should crash the client too:
CODE
default {
state_entry() {
llSay(0, "Hello, world.");
}
}

Here, when in doubt, put a double-single quote around the text you're adding. It's the 'politest' way of adding something in.

That's a ''like this'', not "like this".

Sooo...

''Actually, I believe the actual crash occurs when the last line of any script is //'

The wiki is open for public editing. If you're not sure of something, please state that, or better yet, test it until you are sure and then submit :) You can also leave a comment at the bottom of each page if you don't want to edit the page.

You also don't need to be signed up for it to edit it. I was thinking of changing that, but we've actually had a couple good changes coming from hosts at lindenlab.com, so I'm willing to let it slide. :)

If you see something that's incomplete, or missing, or even an outright lie, by all means, change it.

Some of the information in there is undoubtedly false. If you find some, fix it. That's the point of the wiki.

Edit: Fixed typo.

I'm as sure about this as I can be since ending a script with a comment always crashes my client. :)

Out of curiosity, what keeps the wiki from degenerating into nothing but pages of "booga booga i r l33t!!!11" if anyone can edit it? And isn't it just kind of rude to change what someone else wrote? I r n00b to the whole wiki concept (at least from the authoring standpoint; I know how to read one and what they're for obviously).

Ah, simple question (I love those :D), every edit to a page is documented. If someone messes something up, anyone can simply revert the page to its previous form.

As for your second question:
Well, if you know if someone is downright *wrong*, there's no problem with changing something. Otherwise, commenting on the page, or making a note (using the two ''s) is perfectly cool.

I almost always use the double single quotes, unless I created the page. :)

In fact I use that instead of putting a comment at the bottom, then someone responds the same, and I reply back and they reply and I reply and then Mama Catherine goes in and cleans up the whole mess.

:D

Well, we've had two cases in which someone "defaced" the wiki.

One was some goober from Toronto who removed the info on someone's profile page. (And I'm pretty confident I know who it is, actually. ;))

The second was someone SPAMMING the wiki in Dutch, selling ringtones. I preserved the post for posterity. :)

A couple times, people have added things that were just completely wrong, but that's actually good too, because such entries let us see misconceptions people might hold and then allow us to address them. ("No, contrary to popular belief, a string is NOT a whole number.";)

Now, it WOULD be possible for someone to come in and be stupid and annoying. And because it's a wiki, while we'd obviously have their IP, we really would have no legal recourse. It's not like we could report them to the Lindens, either -- your conduct outside of SL cannot be policed.

It'd just cause a lot of hassle for everyone involved, so don't do it.

In practice, if you're unsure about changing something, it's usually best to add your comments or notes to a page and then wait for someone more "senior" to edit them into something that makes sense instead of "no it's not" "yes it is" "no, but...", and so on. :)

Don't think of it as editing someone's post, think of it as one big public manual up in the middle of the room. It's in our best interests to keep it as consistent and usable as possible, so there's motivation for everyone to keep it clean.

Don't actually use the 'comment' feature down at the bottom of the page. No one ever reads those (or I don't) and they're hard to delete.

Thanks for all the input. I'll try adding to that page with something approaching clarity.

I see someone already did. Nevermind. /me slinks away.

Yeah, you have to act fast. Someone might fix a problem before you get to it. ;)

Just be sure to check the WikiStyleGuide in Wiki.

(I KNOW Wiki is not a proper noun. I still like using it that way.)
