Hosting my own Simulator

Hi there, hopefully this is the right section for such questions, but I have been playing around with OpenSIM and SL, and was wondering if there is a way to host your own sim, and have it accessible through the map in game?
I love hosting servers and if possible may even grow larger and host more sims/sell them to people in the future. I've owned servers for games from half-life all the way to private servers for WoW.

Hahaha, just wondering if anyone knows anything about this, or has even thought about it as I'm really dedicated to learning more about this and provide land to people =).

Thank you!

SL is a closed system. There's now way to integrate your privately hosted server into the grid.

In the future it will happen. That is LL's ultimate goal. They want there to be a universal network of virtual worlds, just as the Internet itself is a universal network of networks.

They've already begun experiments in which they've successfully teleported avatars from one grid to another. But there are many more hurtles to overcome, not the least of which is security, before they open that sort of thing up to the public.

Land now available for rent in Indigo. Low rates. Quiet, low-lag mainland sim with good neighbors. IM me in-world if you're interested.

You did have a chance about a year ago.

The project continues on. I think you can still join and bounce around a bit. But they stopped adding regions a while back.

edit: but that was never connected to the maingrid..

You could try using the RealXtend viewer and the "smooth teleport" feature to travel back and forth between an opensim and SL. This "teleport" is really an automatic logoff/logon, your linden inventory and linden id don't come with you. This can be scripted so a user just clicks an object and a popup comes up asking for logon info to the system you want to "tp" into.

Within the opensim world you can use something called the "hypergrid" feature and I think you can carry around your opensim id and inventory around. OSgrid has this feature, you should try it out.

Opensim servers can be really cheap too. I used to run a 4 region sim using a vps from tektonic that cost $15usd a month and it worked fairly well.
