I had to remove SL from one of my computers. It caused virus and I have big problems. Now I can't use my computer anymore. Is there any option to change the aplication in that whay there will be no virus? And how long will that take?

Is there any option to change the aplication in that whay there will be no virus? And how long will that take? So you really believe "SL caused the virus"? Does that mean the rest of the 50,000+ online people have the virus and are not complaining? Or do they not know because their computer is still working? SL does not cause Viruses. Users create them, and users fail to properly protect their computers against them. I believe you failed to properly protect yourself and that SL had nothing to do with that. _____________________

Reinstall your OS. Install a good antivirus. Fully patch the OS and all applications. Install SL. Done.

Wendell, can you elaborate on what you mean? What exactly happened that made you assume your computer has a virus? And what made you believe SL was responsible?

"sl caused a virus" is definite proof that the tinfoil hat the OP's wearing has been cutting off oxygen to the brain.

Guys, I know it's tempting to laugh through your keyboard when someone says something preposterous like "SL caused a virus". But really, what's to be gained by that? Rather than make fun of a person simply for not yet having had the opportunity to learn, how about we work towards properly educating him/her? That IS what these forums are for, after all. Please, let's not let this become just another typical gaming forum where people foolishly demonstrate their self-delusions of "superiority" all day long by teasing anyone who dares know less than them about any given topic. SL is better than that. We're better than that. Some of us have worked hard for years to keep these forums useful.
Wendell, once again, what exactly is going on with your computer? I'm sure we can help you fix it, whatever it is. So you know, just as others have stated already (some more politely than others), it's not possible that SL could have caused a virus. That's just now it works. But there are certainly cleverly written viruses out there that can make you think they're associated with certain programs, SL included, even though they're not. Just the other day, someone reported a trojan that fools SL into thinking the virus's presence is necessary in order for SL to run. In truth, the malware has nothing whatsoever to do with SL, and SL certainly didn't cause it to be there in any way, shape, or form. But unless you've been educated on how this stuff actually does work, it would not be an unreasonable conclusion to think SL caused the problem. It would be incorrect, of course, but not unreasonable, given the information at hand. That's part of the goal of many viruses, by the way, to fool you into thinking things that aren't true, for all manner of reasons. Again, tell us exactly what's wrong, and chances are we'll be able to help you solve the problem. _____________________

I may have been a little brusque but i wasn't making fun of them.
It is rather upsetting that someone who could find SL, decide they want to participate in the virtual world experience, and after installing it decides SL caused a virus on their computer, in this day in age, almost 2010 hey. Google is there to correct this stuff, works in most languages, and it boggles me when people don't use that either. Such ignorance is almost inexcusable if they are an adult. Edit: I am referring to the blaming of SL for causing a virus; not ignorance of how to use the internet to learn your way around an obstacle or misconception. _____________________

I'm going to take a slightly different tack on this.....actually not that much different than Chosen's (man, I that's strange.........I'm joking Chosen
![]() And a bigger down side that erks me quite a bit. The OP probably uninstalled SL, deleted all bookmarks to the website and may even have formated his computer and started over.....simply because of the immediate smart ass responses posted. The first two and the fourth response would have been more than enough for me walk away forever thinking SL was a virus infected, hacker controlled online game full of smart mouth children with nothing more exciting to do than infect innocent people's computer with maleware. Wendell, if you are still reading this do as Chosen has said. Give us something to try to help you with. Especially what the symptoms are that made you think you picked up a virus. Also where did you download the viewer from? Chances are very small you picked up anything bad. |

Saying a program gave you a virus without any proof is well, ignorant. I'm sorry, but it is incredibly ignorant. I agree entirely with Veritable Quandry (Post #3).

The difference between ignorance and stupidity is that ignorance can be rectified by good teaching and a willing pupil.

Seems like a popular topic.
Re-posting my answer to the other thread here: I'm fairly sure, correct me if I'm wrong, that the SL viewer hooks Quicktime to play videos. Out of date versions of Quicktime are known security risks and playing any malformed content from the web presents a risk of infection. When you play any media, video or sound, you are pulling in content that lives in the dirty world of the Internet and not under the control of LL. Good virus protection and keeping software up to date is paramount. To help keep your PC protected check out the free version of Secunia PSI for home users. It can detect vulnerabilities and provides information and direct download links for rectification and updates. http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/ http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/ Rime |

The difference between ignorance and stupidity is that ignorance can be rectified by good teaching and a willing pupil. Where did that quote come from? good quote. In terms of what you mentioned with the virus through videos, it's almost impossible to do that due to where the actual video and content downloads to on a temperary basis. I would also recommend that you don't "advertise" virus software that is not widly known, could open you up to a potential problem if it messes someones computer up. Good quote, not so awesome advice. _____________________

Was it really necessary to resurrect this thread just to call the OP names? I can't imagine what you thought you were accomplishing by that. We've now got people arguing over whether or not the freshest advice given in response to this month-dead topic, which was a non-issue from the start, is good advice or bad. If that was your goal, nice work. Otherwise, you'd do well to let the dead rest where you find it. _____________________

Possibly he doens't recall when the Linden's told us all to download the new version of Quicktime, because there was this problem. "Virus" yikes... |

I think Wendell left.........which is unfortunate.
Three of the first four responses, I think, contributed to Wendell's departure. Smart ass, condescending comments directed at someone who merely has a problem and is seeking help or advice usually does that. We are all guilty of doing that to some degree when we know the poster is mistaken.......but we should try to be more understanding. Or keep our fingers still. |
