Okay I did this before and it worked though I read my MB was known to reset the overclock here and there on resets but I did the tester forget the name something 95 or something prime95. for 24 hours 4 times on each cpu..

Anyways she ran great at 3.4GHz even bought a special fan for it... The problem is I don't mind it be 3.0-3.4ghz but I can't get it to go anymore.. I used this guide I saw on the internet the guy had exactly the same hardware and grrr it worked great... But everytime I play with random settings and try to do manual or auto voltage I get the old lock and burn up while windows or booting or while in a game...

Anyways here is my specs:

CPU:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Core Stepping: G0

MB:
P35C-DS3R

RAM:
DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, OCZ
DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, OCZ
DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, OCZ
DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MBytes, OCZ
(So yeah 4x 1gig chips hehe)

Video Card:
9800 GX2
(well its fine unless there is a safe OC for it without new fans heh)

If anyone could tell me exactly what settings to try or even if they have a guide on how to OC without crashing evey 2 min cuz it sucks and its confusing hehe.. It's funny I can program run mmorpg servers and heck even do hex editing and stuff really good... But when it comes to OC and bios :p grrr why did I fail hehe.

Anyways any help would be great!

Thanks,
Kane

PS the PSU like 800 or something so its not a power issues and the HD's are 2x f1 Samsung not raided right now.

if your "playing with random" numbers you really should not be overclocking, there is a science behind it

get it right you get minor speed improvement

get it wrong and the least of your worries is windows not booting, its fried hardware

ive even had chips in the past after being abused were not stable in a overclcoked state, they just could not do it anymore, ive also have them where they would run, but at like 50% speed, and of course the worst case dead

then I can get my self a new 3.0ghz chip :D

The first thing to go is usually the motherboard, not the CPU.

1) Overclocking will shorten the lifespan of your computer.

2) When over clocking you will need to SLOWLY bring up the clock (5-10mhz on the FSB). This involves rebooting multiple times, stress testing the system for an hour or two and repeating. Make sure to have a piece of paper and a calculator to log what your northbridge, ram and CPU will be running at. Also once the system has been running for a period log the idle and stressed temperature for the North Bridge and CPU.

3) When your computer invariably refuses to boot with a lovely cascade of beeps you will need to reset the bios (usually you flip a jumper near the CMOS battery). Thus the log you should have been keeping will come in handy. Set everything back up a bit below where you had issues, generally you don't want to run your system right on the edge.

4) Be patient. Overclocking can take several days to several weeks to properly test. Try to rush things and you will end up with a dead computer, and it isn't fun trying to figure out what component died.

I would highly recommend getting to understand how the hardware works before you begin to fiddle with things. The stuff I have written is pretty basic and should not be used as a stand alone guide. Go through the BIOS and look up what each setting does. Some of the settings are pretty hard to understand (particularly certain memory settings). If you don't know what you are doing then you can inadvertently make performance worse then it already is.

Considering you have a Q6600 I would delay overclocking for a year or two. Right now you probably aren't even pushing the processor. You might be able to speed things up, but I doubt you would notice the difference (even going to 3Ghz is only a 15% improvement in clock speed).
