I've uninstalled and reinstalled SL, and nothing changed. I re-checked the system requirements, and Radeon X300 SE video card thingy is not listed, on either the required list or the will-not-work-with list, and that's what I have. Is that what's making everyone look like terrible scarecrows with faces coming out of their torsos? Let me note that everything else looks and works absolutely fine in the game---the people are the only problem.

Try this:
Edit / Preferences / Graphics tab, make sure "Custom" is checked and uncheck "Hardware Skinning"
I think the search term to find this in the forums is Shredded Jesus.
