Constant Crash to Desktop

Since Linden will not help me because I am using a Basic account and suggested the forum for guidance, here I am...

My symptoms are simple: At any time after login my client crashes straight to desktop with the report error dialog box. The time varies from 5 minutes to as long as 2 hours. I crash more frequently in an area that is heavily populated (such as a dense club with many prims and etc) vs non-frequently in an open environment with low prim usage and relatively few AVs (2-4).

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (3200 MHz) /w HT
Memory: 1535 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra/AGP/SSE2 256 MB
DirectX: 9.0c
Open GL: 2.1.2
AV: Avira AntiVir Personal
Firewall: Comodo Firewall

Things I have tried to alleviate the problem......

* Reinstalled with the latest client (Multiple times)
* Reinstalled on different harddrive
* Installed the Release Client
* Installed CoolViewer
* Deleted the SecondLife folder under Application Data after each reinstall
* Deleted Cache manually
* Relocated Cache location
* Moved Cache to a RAM Drive for near instantaneous read and write access
* Downgraded video drivers to 175.16 from 175.19 (uninstall, reboot, ran DriverCleaner, reboot, install, reboot)
* Disabled second monitor
* Ran ChkDsk
* Defragmented
* Ran memtest86 - No errors
* Added --novoice --noprobe --purge --nopreload --nosound --noaudio to shortcut
* Used a alt (this one actually) to load to see if it was an inventory bug
* Adjusted Video to High, Low, Custom Low, Network to Max, Min, Medium - Same with Cache
* Countless others.....

The one thing I noticed in the log is the gpu is being detected as a 5900? Or perhaps it's just a default class.

Please? Help? Anyone?... Taking any advice that may lead to a solution!

Separate computer on same internet with slower stats runs just fine for hours on end but I don't always have access to it.

This system runs everything else flawlessly; PSP8, Titans Quest, Sins of a Solar Empire (extremely heavy resource usage), World of Warcraft... All have higher stat requirements then SecondLife.

With no help from Linden I am just about to give up.. please help!

Thank you from a woman who is pulling her hair out trying to figure out this tedious problem.

I guess you've already set up SLVoice.exe and Secondlife.exe as trusted applications in comodo, right ?

What does the log say in the moment of the crash? Also, could you please post the complete output of the help/about window?

Yes, my next attempt I will be uninstalling both AV and Comodo and upgrading back to my original drivers since the downgrade didn't change a thing.

Try disabling the OpenGL Vertex Buffer in the hardware graphic options, as this is prone to causing crashes.

And also, set your Texture Memory to 1.5x less than what your graphic card has.

I used to crash quite a lot in dense areas, but after doing these tweaks, I rarely ever do.

on my old pc with the FX 5200 I found setting everything close to min and a 64 draw as well the texture memory to 128k or less and it will go for hours if I set the tex. mem. to the full 256 it will crash constantly like you describe. sometimes after 5 min some times a few hours.

edit to add. you are running quite old hardware ( APG slots are so old its hard to even find a slow GFX card), and it will be prone to many more crashes..due to what SL is doing compared to any other aplication/game.

you may want to try adding more memory max it out 1.5 do you have two different sixe sticks or 3 sticks of 512? I added 4 to my old compaq below (usable 3.5) and it made a definite improvement as well. thank god its just a spare PC now

Tried that and it seems like no change. I appreciate the thought though.

I will give this a shot when I am at the troublesome PC once again. I know it seems to always reset back to 128 simply because it can't detect VRAM which is 256.

Yes, I understand AGP is a dying hardware but SL runs perfectly fine (albeit slow, but no crashing) on the other PC which is running a GeForce series 4 card (Ti4400). One or the other shouldn't really matter - especially since the card in the troublesome PC is quite faster with double the VRAM.

It's 3 sticks of 512 - all the same brand (corsair) and same type. I believe it is 2800 but it might be 3200. I don't have access to the PC at the current time to double check that.

I do appreciate your suggestions Distilled1 and Harrison. Will report back with my findings *crosses fingers*
