On monday, I had fun in the computer upgrade dept. I goet a new (fancy) LCD monitor, doubled my RAM, and got a new processor fan/heatsink because my old one was makin noises. I also threw together a quick home network.
Now, after I got everything together, I tried to run second life. It crashed before hitting the splash screen. I tried agian. Crash. I Uninstalled and reinstalled the program, I got it to run, found some fun errors you get if your network isn't quite right. Then I tried to sign in again, but this time I had set my user prefs back to where they were before I reninstalled. Crash. Reinstall. It runs. I try and turn on windowed mode and start it. Crash.
So I cruise the internet, making sure that all my drivers are updated, I got directx 9, etc. after reinstalling all my drivers, I try runing it in windowed agian. Crash. Argh. You have several logs from me, as the crash reporter comes up. Dr. Watson ain't on my win 98 machine, so I don't know how valuble they will be as it doesn't seem it was running long enough to log anything.
I get a fatal error "Newview has doen something dad to Newview.exe" I will send a email to you guys with the exact tex and all those fun numbers.
Nothing has changed on my sys besides the heatsink, monitor, and network (ain't installed the RAM yet), and I'm not sure whay ANY of those would make a difference.
I would like my windowed mode back please - it is very nice to be able to switch between viewer and script doc, email, etc without alt tabbing.

BBC, a new CPU and monitor shouldn't do anything! with more ram... shouldn't have a problem... What Os are you running and how much ram do you have? Maybe it's your network.. because the only things that cause stuff like that are usually Vid Cards, MB and sound cards. What did you change, from the time SL was good to crash? Like everything! or just send the log to the lindens! The network stuff shouldn't be a problem I have a router + hub... And I played with someone else on the same connection... no problems... what are your system specs?

I had a series of crashes before trying to run in windowed mode. Turns out I had my colors set to 16 bit instead of 32 bit. Found it out completely by accident.

The pink perforated ping pong ball of rightness goes to Paul!
When I hooked up the new monitor, I installed drivers, the drivers reset everything to 2 color 128*256 resolution. Needless to say, that looked horrid. for some odd reason, I could only up it to 16 bit color at first, and not change the resolution. When I restarted, I could set the resolution, but I forgot to up it past 16 bit color.
Yay Paul
